MARSHFIELD - Matt DiGrigoli scored on a 2-yard run and Sean Griffith kicked a field goal as Marshfield built a 10-0 lead and held on to down Falmouth, 10-6, last night in an Atlantic Coast League showdown.

With the win, Marshfield clinched the ACL title and a berth in the Division 2A playoffs Dec. 1 against the winner of the Patriot Keenan.

“It’s the type of game that you’re telling them all week it’s going to be [like that],’’ Marshfield coach Lou Silva said. “It could be a point, 2 points, whatever. That’s a good Falmouth team . . . They’re awesome and for us to keep them at 6 points says a lot for our defense.’’

The Rams dug in their heels and used that defense to keep the feisty Clippers from coming back. In the fourth quarter, trailing, 10-6, Falmouth drove from its 8-yard line to the Marshfield 22 before being hit with a 15-yard penalty.

Senior quarterback Mike Thines threw three incomplete passes, the last one being a desperate launch from the 44-yard line trying to reach the end zone.

“I thought the key was to keep the quarterback under check,’’ Silva said of Falmouth’s final drive. “Take the quarterback away and hope for the best.’’

DiGrigoli’s short TD run five seconds into the second capped an 80-yard drive and gave the Rams a 7-0 lead.

After Griffith extended the lead to 10-0 eight minutes later, Falmouth responded.

Thines found junior back Josh LaFrange in the end zone with a 24-yard pass that capped an eight-play, 56-yard drive in the third quarter.
