Cohasset moves step closer to crown
COHASSET - One step at a time. That’s Cohasset’s mind-set right now when it comes to clinching the South Shore League title.
With last night’s 14-0 win over Abington, the Skippers are one win away from the top spot. They need to beat either Norwell or Hull to seal the deal.
“Our guys just never gave up,’’ said Cohasset coach Peter Afanasiw. “They blocked down on defense. You know we took advantage of a couple nice plays.’’
The Green Wave’s first drive of the game ended with a punt from their 22. Senior receiver Brendan Doonan returned the punt 11 yards from the 50 and the Skippers were in position to take control.
Three plays was all it took for Cohasset to score.
Junior quarterback Jeff Cavanaro threw a 19-yard rocket to Thomas Flibotte for a first down. Flibotte followed it up with a 2-yard carry to put the Skippers at the 18. Cavanaro then threw a TD pass to Doonan, who held onto the ball amid the clutches of an Abington defender.
Doonan kicked the extra point to put the Skippers up, 7-0, with 40 seconds remaining in the half.
Afanasiw credited his defense for the win. “[The Green Wave] threw every trick in the book that they had at us,’’ he said.
Sure enough, the Green Wave had a chance to get on the board first with 2:56 remaining in the first quarter with a 25-yard field goal attempt, but it was short and off to the right.
Cohasset capped its scoring with the help of a dramatic interception returned for 49 yards in the fourth quarter by sophomore Kyle Livingstone. Abington started the quarter with a nine-play drive, but a third-down pass was picked off at the 10-yard line.
The Skippers needed just four plays this time, as junior running back Jake Kissick broke through on fourth and 3 for a 34-yard touchdown run. It was Kissick’s first carry and TD of the season.
“They put me in on the package just to get a few extra yards and I saw a hole and just ran as fast as I possibly could,’’ Kissick said.![]()
