NORTH DIGHTON - After Fairhaven took an 8-0 lead with six minutes remaining in the first half last night, Dighton-Rehoboth coach Dave Driscoll knew the importance of his team’s next series.

“After [Fairhaven] scored, we knew that the next time we had the ball we had to score,’’ said Driscoll. “It would be anyone’s game after that.’’

Driscoll’s team responded with its first of four straight scoring drives as the Falcons passed their way to a 29-8 victory.

Dighton-Rehoboth (7-2, 6-0) controls its destiny in the South Coast Conference. The Falcons host Old Rochester next week before facing Seekonk in what could be a league-deciding Thanksgiving battle, provided that Seekonk wins tonight and next week.

The game-changing drive for the Falcons was spearheaded by fullback Tyler Berry, who rushed for 34 of the 59 yards, including a 4-yard touchdown plunge when he lowered his head and muscled his way into the end zone. Tom Harrington’s 2-point conversion rush knotted the score at 8 as the teams broke for halftime.

“We ran the ball effectively on that drive,’’ said Driscoll. “We didn’t pass on the drive and that was a good thing to see. Then in the second half, we took off.’’

After intermission, the Falcons came out flying. Dighton-Rehoboth lulled the Blue Devil defense to sleep, running on the first five plays. Then, on third and 7, Brett Croteau threw a 38-yard frozen rope to Brian Espinosa for a touchdown. Croteau hit Nate Sprague for the 2-point conversion, resulting in a 16-8 lead.

“The line did its job in the running game and that opened up the pass later,’’ said Espinosa.

That touchdown wasn’t the only time Croteau and Espinosa connected. Following an interception by Bryan Rocha, Espinosa raced by a defender and underneath a perfect Croteau pass for a 68-yard strike, giving the Falcons a 23-8 lead.

“Brett and Brian did a great job,’’ said Driscoll. “The play was to hit the underneath route, but you might as well take the deep pass if it is open.’’

After another turnover by Fairhaven (6-3, 5-2), the Croteau-Espinosa connection worked its magic again. This time, Croteau found Espinosa wide open for a 65-yard touchdown.

All four of Croteau’s completions went to Espinosa, totaling 184 yards.

Fairhaven controlled the ball for 13 of the first 14 minutes of the game, piling up 93 yards on 25 plays and jumped out to an early lead. After the Blue Devils’ first drive stalled deep in Falcon territory, Fairhaven forced a three-and-out and got back to work. The Blue Devils marched 50 yards in 14 plays, ending in Myles Perron-Sovick’s 1-yard TD run.
