ACTON - Michael Sylvia missed school Wednesday and Thursday with a 100-degree fever, and was still feeling the effects of his illness yesterday at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional.
Coach Tom Lopez asked him if he was able to play both ways. The nurses told him he could take the rest of the day off.
But no, he decided, last night’s opponent, rival Acton-Boxboro, was too important to sit out.
And good thing he suited up, sickness and all, as the 6-foot senior tailback ran for 112 yards on 19 carries to lead the Warriors in a 7-0 upset of Dual County Large leader A-B.
L-S improved to 3-6 (1-2), while A-B fell to 5-4 (2-1).
“You can’t ask for anything more,’’ Sylvia said. “We’re not going to the playoffs, but this is the best thing we can get, coming in here and beating A-B on its home field. We played as a team for the first time this year. Everybody was together.’’
The loss means Acton-Boxboro coach Bill Maver will have to wait at least another week for a chance to collect his 200th career victory.
“Coach Lopez has been here a while, he’s in the 200-win club himself,’’ senior tackle and captain Patrick Crosby said with a smile. “We wanted to keep that club for Lopez alone.’’
The game’s lone score came on a 4-yard Owen Pagano scamper in the first quarter, set up by a 60-yard pass from Matt Cahill to tight end John Harris. Facing third and 15 at the L-S 31, Harris caught the short pass over the middle and broke to the right sideline, racing with the secondary until being pushed out inside the 10-yard line. The Warriors scored three plays later.
“That set the tone for the game,’’ Sylvia said. “That’s a shocker when you break something open like that early in the game.’’ Mike Baranowsky had two interceptions to stall A-B’s passing game.![]()
