Natick gets by Wildcats
NATICK - The Weymouth Wildcats came out with a statement to make last night against undefeated and fifth-ranked Natick: they weren’t going down without a fight.
Their message was heard loud and clear when Derek Newcomb returned the opening kickoff 85 yards to stun the Red and Blue
But Natick (9-0) had all the answers after that, striking back on its first drive to score on Scott McCummings’s 25-yard run and pulling away to down the Wildcats, 35-12.
Later in the first quarter Natick threatened again, getting to the Weymouth 1 before Antone Ellison fumbled. Weymouth’s Dylan Colarusso recovered, but after the Wildcats could do nothing, Natick struck.
After a Weymouth punt, Natick took over at its 40-yard line. The scoring drive was capped by Brett Farrell’s 1-yard run with six minutes left in the first quarter.
Colarusso almost answered for Weymouth before the half ended.
Despite having his left wrist in a cast, the running back rushed four times for 24 yards to start the drive. The Wildcats (6-3) made it to the Natick 9-yard line before stalling, and couldn’t convert a 26-yard field goal with just over a minute left.
McCummings threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Robbie Jackson with 4 1/2 minutes left to extend Natick’s lead to 21-6 in the third quarter. Newcomb answered again for Weymouth 46 seconds into the fourth, running 15 yards for the score, leaving the Wildcats trailing, 21-12.
Natick committed another damaging turnover, this one in the Weymouth end zone when McCummings was picked off by Jarred Terrell.
The Wildcats drove to the Natick 40 before Mitch Temple was picked off by linebacker Kevin Duffy. A blocking below the waist penalty gave Natick a first down at the Weymouth 25.
On third and 10, McCummings sealed the deal, connecting with Jackson again, this time with a 25-yard touchdown pass that gave Natick a 28-12 lead.
Temple drove the Wildcats into Natick territory before Jackson intercepted his pass at the Red and Blue 30 and ran it back for a 70-yard touchdown.![]()
