DUXBURY - The Green Dragons were down to their last breath.

Trailing Scituate, 13-7, in overtime, Duxbury faced fourth down at the Sailors’ 5-yard line.

Bobby Murphy took the handoff, eluded a defender in the backfield, and powered into the end zone for the tying score. Then on the 2-point conversion, Murphy again crashed through the line and into the end zone, giving the Dragons (8-2, 5-0) a 15-13 victory and the Patriot League Keenan title.

“That game was a battle the whole way,’’ said Duxbury coach Dave Maimaron. “Every inch was fought for and in the end we put the game in the hands of the offensive line and Bobby Murphy.’’

With the victory, the Dragons advance to the Division 2A playoffs for the second straight season, where they are scheduled to face Marshfield.

Scituate (8-2, 3-1) had the ball first in overtime and wasted no time finding the end zone. Wes Hawkins took a sweep 10 yards for the score. On the 2-point attempt, a Duxbury defender obscured enough of Casey Burns’s view to cause him to drop the pass.

“We thought we had the pass but Duxbury did a great job disrupting the play,’’ said Scituate coach Herb Devine.

The Dragons had a chance to win the game in regulation. With 27 seconds remaining, Ben Startzell lined up for a 44-yard field goal but Hawkins sprinted past the line to block the kick.

The Dragons dominated play, holding Scituate to 101 yards of offense. Duxbury was also able to move the ball well, but turnovers allowed Scituate to stay in the game and even score the first points.

Duxbury drove to the Sailors’ 10-yard line early in the fourth quarter. On second down, Matt Hallisey took the pitch from quarterback Kane Haffey, stopped, and looked toward Haffey, who was streaking toward the end zone. Matt Stewart read the play like a book, though, and picked off the pass and scampered 95 yards for the score.

“Matt Stewart made a great heads-up play,’’ said Devine. “We knew they liked to have gadget plays and we told our kids to stay home.’’

Duxbury went back to the basics, handing the ball to Murphy. The senior ran for 191 yards on 30 carries, including 47 yards on Duxbury’s only scoring drive in regulation. Murphy ran off left tackle, slithered out of a defender’s grasp, and rumbled 28 yards to tie the score, 7-7, with 5:39 remaining.

The Dragons had a golden opportunity to take the lead on their first drive of the second half. Murphy set the Dragons up with first and goal at the 2-yard line. After a 2-yard loss by Murphy, Haffey was picked off by Burns, leaving Duxbury empty-handed.
