Lynn Tech holds on for victory
Southeastern falls short
QUINCY - Pedro Martinez caught a touchdown pass and ran for another score and Lynn Tech held on to down Southeastern, 18-16, in the state Large Division Vocational Super Bowl last night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Southeastern was knocking on the door as time wound down, having driven to the Lynn Tech 25, but the Tigers halted the Hawks one last time with 25 seconds left, stopping quarterback Mike Smith on a fourth-down run.
Lynn Tech (8-4) struck first on the game’s opening possession. After an eight-play march, sophomore quarterback Luis Tavarez, making his first varsity start, threw a 23-yard strike to Martinez for a 6-0 lead.
Southeastern (6-6) replied with an 11-play drive out of the double wing formation that included three pitchouts that gained more than 40 yards. The drive was capped off on a 12-yard run by junior Tyson Boone, who totaled 37 yards on the drive. Nicholas Ready pounded in the 2-point conversion to give the Hawks an 8-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Tigers controlled the second quarter, though, scoring a pair of touchdowns to take command.
Martinez struck first, running 7 yards for his second TD of the game and putting the Tigers back on top, 12-8. Ryan Murphy added to the lead before the quarter was out, going 10 yards around the end for an 18-8 lead.
Southeastern crept closer on Smith’s 27-yard TD pass to Daryl Instasi in the third quarter, but came up empty on its final lengthy drive. Starting at his 19 with more than nine minutes to go, Smith directed a 20-play drive that took the Hawks to the Lynn Tech 25, converting three times on fourth down. But his final fourth-down bid came up short.
“We just ran out of time at the end of the game,’’ said Hawks coach Dan Tripp.
“Maybe one more block, maybe just one step quicker out the backfield, we could’ve made it,’’ he said.![]()
