When you’re playing for a championship in December, sometimes the aerial attack has to be traded in for old-fashioned power football.

St. John’s was able to flip that switch last night. The Pioneers’ defense made all the big plays and the rushing attack put up the points, as St. John’s defeated Marlboro, 21-10, in the Central Mass. Division 1A Super Bowl at Worcester State College.

Marlboro finished 12-1, while St. John’s ended 11-2. On the first play of the fourth quarter, St. John’s junior running back John Vassar rambled 27 yards for a touchdown that put the Pioneers ahead, 14-10. Vassar had several big runs during the 89-yard drive.

On the Panthers’ ensuing possession, St. John’s junior Richard Rodgers blocked a punt to set up his offense at the Marlboro 25-yard line. The Pioneers capitalized moments later, when Griffin Murphy scored on a 4-yard quarterback keeper. Rodgers’ kick made it 21-10 with 5:10 to play.

Marlboro’s hopes for a comeback were dashed when St. John’s forced a fumble that was recovered by Rodgers on fourth and 1 with 2:46 to play.
