It was the biggest game of the year in the Boston City North, and for the first time in three years, the Madison Park Cardinals soared highest, crushing East Boston’s playoff hopes with a 22-14 win at East Boston Stadium last night.
In taking the Boston North championship away from East Boston, the Cardinals (6-1, 5-0) earned themselves a Division 4 playoff berth and ended the Jets’ three-year reign.
Madison Park will meet Commonwealth (Large) champion Shawsheen the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
“I’m proud of the team and I’m happy with all the seniors because they’ve had to watch years of us being in second place, and now they can finally take this one home,’’ said coach Roosevelt Robinson.
Madison Park started slowly, as they muffed the opening kickoff. But with backs Andre Rickerson and Brandon Campbell out of the game, arguably Eastie’s most lethal offensive weapons, the Jets never could get off the ground as they squandered that early chance by turning it over on downs.
Both teams misfired for much of the first half, before Ely Plaza marched the Cardinals down the field, capping the drive by finding Khayree Hudson in the corner of the end zone from 12 yards out with no time remaining in the half. The 2-point try failed, leaving Madison Park with a 6-0 edge at intermission.
After Eastie did nothing with its first possession of the second half, the Cardinals needed just five plays to score on a 3-yard rush down the middle by Dequell Golson. Chris Philyew plunged into the end zone for the 2-point conversion, boosting Madison Park’s lead to 14-0. Philyew finished with 105 yards on the ground.
Eastie finally got on the board on an 18-yard pass to Maicol Restrepo from Anthony Whitney, who also hit Connor Henry with the 2-point conversion to make it 14-8.
But Isiah White sealed the win in the fourth for Madison park, scoring a 1-yard TD by diving over the Jets’ line to make it 22-8.
Eastie’s Davonte Holloway tossed a 10-yard TD pass to quarterback Anthony Whitney on the flea flicker in the closing minutes, but it was too late for the Jets.
“Madison played hard and well defensively, they deserve it,’’ said Jets coach John Parziale.![]()
