Record finish for St. Mary’s of Lynn
St. Mary’s will not be playing postseason football, but there’s plenty to celebrate in Lynn.
The Spartans (10-1) tied a school record for regular-season wins, knocking off Lynn Tech, 40-6, last night.
Nick Day anchored the Spartan ground game with 107 yards and three touchdowns, but he wasn’t alone.
The Spartans rushed for more than 300 yards, as Todd Collier (124 yards, 1 TD) and Ryan Barrows (116 yards, 1 TD) also surpassed the century mark.
Collier kicked off the scoring in the first quarter with a 23-yard run, which Day followed with a 3-yard TD.
Touchdowns from Barrows and Day extended the halftime lead to 32-0, then Day made it 40 with his third score in the third quarter.
Lynn Tech’s Kennedy Gomes ran 25 yards for a TD on the game’s final play to prevent the shutout.
Despite St. Mary’s stellar record, Cardinal Spellman (11-0, 5-0) won the Catholic Central Large and the state playoff berth.
Cardinal Spellman 42, Archbishop Williams 0 — Spellman senior Blaise Branch extended his EMass scoring lead with four TDs, giving him 34.
The 5-foot-9-inch, 170-pound back ran for 187 yards, and has 11 TDs in his last three games.
The Spellman defense allowed 54 yards of total offense to Archies (2-8, 0-5) en route to its fifth shutout. The Cardinals are allowing 6.36 points per game.
Spellman meets Hamilton-Wenham Tuesday in its first-round playoff game.
Lunenburg 41, St. Bernard’s 22 — The Blue Knights (4-7) got two TD runs by senior Mike Sullender. The first-year quarterback’s second score — a 51-yarder in the third quarter — broke an 8-8 tie.
