Pacitto’s field goal does it for Wakefield
Fans of old-fashioned, hard-nosed defensive football would have loved yesterday’s 3-0 Wakefield win in the Warriors’ Thanksgiving Day showdown against Melrose.
Joe Pacitto gave the Warriors all the points they’d need by kicking a 33-yard field goal with six minutes remaining, and the defense made it stand up, stopping Melrose on fourth-and-goal with 10 seconds left to seal the win.
Melrose (8-3, 2-3 Middlesex Small) leads the series, 51-40-6, but Wakefield (9-2, 5-0) is headed to the playoffs, having locked up the first guaranteed playoff berth for the Middlesex Small with a 39-0 win over Watertown Nov. 11.
The Warriors will play Marblehead Tuesday in the semifinal round at a venue to be determined.
