Maggie Hoffman of Avon notches 50th career win
Thursday's game might have looked like an easy victory for the Avon softball team, but it marked a milestone for senior Maggie Hoffman, who recorded her 50th career win in a 14-0 shutout against visiting Bristol County. "I work hard during the offseason and stay late at practice every day," Hoffman said, "I knew my 50th career win could come this year, so I've been working really hard to reach that." Hoffman struck out four, walked none, and contributed a home run and double as Avon improved to 12-1. "When I met Maggie she was in seventh grade and I thought she'd be good for JV," said Panthers coach Karen McCarthy. "Then I saw her pitch and said, 'You've got to be kidding me.' Lincoln-Sudbury boys' lacrosse defeats Concord-Carlisle for coach's 200th victory
Lincoln-Sudbury boys' lacrosse coach Brian Vona won his 200th career game in a 9-8 win over Concord-Carlisle on Thursday night. Vona declined to comment on what the milestone win meant to him, though. "I don't care about that," he said. "I want to talk about the game." And the 14th-year Warriors head coach was more than happy to talk about his defense's performance. Vona raved about the No. 6-ranked Warriors' backline, which withstood a final-minute attack from the No. 3 Patriots to preserve the win in the semifinals of the Coaches Challenge Cup at Andover High School. "We're playing really good defense," he said. "Our defense is playing great, and we're really starting to jell as a defensive unit. It was really outstanding today."( 04/19/2013 12:00 AM )

Athlete use of alcohol in spotlight
In Swampscott this month, two hockey players showed up drunk at a dance and were ruled ineligible for the squad's state championship game that was scheduled two days later. In February, a star basketball player at Wareham High School lost his spot on the team after police found more than a pound of marijuana in his car. And in January, several Lincoln Sudbury Regional High School athletes missed games after they were caught -- along with dozens of other students -- at a beer bash. Kevin Brogioli, boys' basketball coach at Wareham High School, said implementing stricter drug and alcohol rules would not eliminate student use. "I think it's very easy to have zero tolerance policies but they're not very effective," said Brogioli. "It's a mixture of patience and there's a little fear factor involved with being stern." Kevin McDougall anchored Marshfield's run to Division 1 state hockey final
When Kevin McDougall stepped onto the ice Sunday night, he was not a bundle of nerves. The stage was about as big as it gets -- under the bright lights and on the big ice sheet at TD Garden, Marshfield taking on defending Division 1 champ Burlington for the state title. But the senior captain had skated on the Garden ice two years ago, as a member of the Rams' 2010-11 championship team. A little practice goes a long way, said the sturdy defenseman. For a time, he and the Rams did just "play the game." He assisted Marshfield's first goal at 2:44 of the opening frame, and the state final was knotted at one apiece headed into the second period. But Burlington parlayed three second-period goals into a comfortable cushion en route to a repeat, 4-2.( 03/21/2013 12:00 AM )

State final a big hurt for Franklin boys' hockey, again
The hurting was visible everywhere. It was clear looking onto the ice, from the TD Garden tunnel after the Franklin High boys' hockey team had lost again on Sunday, becoming just the third program since 1943 to reach the state finals three straight years only to lose all three times. The dyed-blonde-haired boys from Wilmington skated in circles and threw their gloves in the air, hugging each other and smiling. Coach Steve Scanlon wore a satisfied grin as he shook hands and hauled in another trophy. But even on his proudest day, with his back-to-back Division 2 state championships behind him and a green flower pinned to his signature black trench coat he's become well-known for, Scanlon could feel the suffering coming from the other side after his team's 4-0 win. Cam Owens, Wilmington High skate off Garden ice as Division 2 champions again
Less than 30 minutes earlier, Cam Owens and his bleach-blond haired Wilmington High teammates, celebrating their 4-0 win over Franklin for the Division 2 state hockey title, had tossed their sticks into the air before hitting the TD Garden ice for a giant dog pile. Now the 21-3-2 Wildcats, shed of their sweat-drenched uniforms in favor of dress shirts, were more than happy to chat in the postgame presser about repeating as state champs. Shifty, creative, and quick on the ice, Owens is a bit humble when he unlaces his skates, and never more than on Sunday afternoon. Yet, the dynamic 5-foot-7, 175-pound senior captain, who will depart Wilmington as the program's all-time leading scorer (72 goals, 86 assists) with a pair of state championships in his pocket, deserved to take a bow. Game changers for Malden Catholic, Burlington, and St. Mary's in state hockey finals
With Austin Prep trailing 2-1 in the third period of the Super 8 championship game Sunday night at TD Garden, senior captain Nolan Vesey made a crafty pass from behind the net to find Cam Russo, who fed the puck across the crease, leaving Malden Catholic goalie Connor Maloney out of position. But Cougars freshman Eric MacAdams, flying through the slot, couldn't get a clean whack at the puck and skied it over the open net. Minutes later, MC sophomore Ara Nazarian skated down the left wing and sniped a shot that eventually gave the Lancers a third straight Super 8 title, 3-2. Sean Murphy (Burlington High) and Alison Butler (St. Mary's of Lynn girls) also delivered game-changing plays on Sunday to lift their respective teams to state hockey championships. Derek DeCastro, Burlington: The senior goalie stopped 25 of 27 shots he faced as the Red Devils repeated as Division 1 state champs with a 4-2 win over Marshfield. Westfield ends rival's record-setting season
The Westfield boys' hockey team put an end to a historic Swampscott season on Sunday afternoon, with a 4-1 win in the Division 3 state championship game at TD Garden. The Bombers took advantage over a shorthanded Big Blue squad, which played without Northeastern Conference South Division MVP Trevor Massey. The Big Blue (19-5-0) entered the third period down, 3-0, but gained the momentum after a wrap-around goal from senior forward Robert Serino with 8:55 to play in the game. However, Bombers (18-3-2) senior goaltender Nick Limberto (22 saves) held Swampscott off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game. Westfield added an empty-netter in the final minute of play. The Bombers were led by senior forward Adam Collier, who had a three-point game, netting two goals and assisting on another. He entered the postseason with just 8 points (three goals, five assists) on the season. The Bombers' leading-scorer, senior forward Sean Spohr (31 points), added three assists. Super 8: Malden Catholic beats Austin Prep for its third straight title
Austin Prep tallied the first score of the Super 8 final but that didn't scare off the two-time defending tournament champions. The Cougars' Nolan Vesey put the game's first goal on the board just 14 seconds into the first period but that would turn out to be one of the team's only true offensive chances. Wilmington beats Frankin for Division 2 boys' hockey crown.
It was a toss-up between who stood out more at the TD Garden on Sunday, the Kelly-green clad fans of Wilmington or the bleached-blond hockey players skating for their adulation. Ultimately they blended together nicely to produce a second consecutive Division 2 state championship for the Wildcats, who defeated Franklin, 4-0, in a rematch of last year's final. "This year it's more of a sense of an accomplishment," said Wilmington coach Steve Scanlon. "It's tough to do it once, never mind going back and doing it a second time."( 03/17/2013 11:13 PM )

Wilmington's Joe Pendenza lining up as a stellar two-way threat for UMass-Lowell hockey
Joe Pendenza dodges the question well. He's worked too hard to get to this point. No point in jinxing it. But when you're the leading scorer on the best team in Hockey East, the acronym N-H-L makes its way into conversation. "I kind of take one day at a time," said Pendoza, an Arlington Catholic graduate who grew up in Wilmington. "If that comes up, I'll see what happens." Pendenza is having his second consecutive standout season for the University of Massachusetts Lowell (22-10-2), with 12 goals and 22 assists in 34 games through Wednesday. With improvements in his defensive ability, Pendenza's two-way play is drawing notice. It's what coaches often point to when describing the difference between a pretty good player and a great player.( 03/17/2013 12:00 AM )

Arlington Catholic sophomore Adrieana Rossini has soared on ice with father's support
At the rink, Arlington Catholic sophomore center Adrieana Rossini needs to know where her dad is at all times. He is at every game. Without him, she feels lost. The habit is an old one between these two. John Rossini says it's unnecessary now. He swears his little girl would be fine on her own. But with Adrieana leading the Arlington Catholic girls' ice hockey team to a second straight appearance in the Division 1 state championship game, Sunday against St. Mary's of Lynn at the TD Garden, there's little reason to change a system that's worked so well. John was careful to avoid being one of those dads who force-fed his favorite sport to his little girl, hoping she would not only eat it, but live and breathe it.( 03/14/2013 12:00 AM )

Mansfield-Oliver Ames program following lead of sophomores Nora Maclaine and Victoria O'Heir
Make no mistake, the Mansfield-Oliver Ames co-op varsity girls' hockey team did not celebrate many victories this winter. But hidden behind the 7-11-2 record, the second-to-last place finish in the SEMGHL West, and the 113 goals against are two beacons of hope, two reasons for coach Pat O'Heir and his second-year program to believe there are much, much better things to come: sophomore centers Nora Maclaine and Victoria O'Heir. In her first season with the program after her transfer from Archbishop Williams, Maclaine registered team-highs in both goals (28) and assists (16). O'Heir, the coach's daughter, was right behind her with 24 goals and 17 assists. The co-op team also received big contributions from Oliver Ames freshman Jamie Gotwald and Mansfield senior captain Maddie Hoffman. ( 03/14/2013 12:00 AM )

Burlington, Wilmington boys' hockey teams eyeing repeats in state finals
On Jan. 16, following a 1-1 draw against Arlington, the Burlington High boys' hockey team was skating on thin ice. The defending Division 1 state champions stood at 2-3-4 through nine games. On Sunday night, thanks to their 2-1 shootout win over Middlesex League rival Winchester in the Division 1 North final, the 13-6-5 Red Devils will have an opportunity to defend their crown. Burlington is not alone: defending Division 2 champ Wilmington High will be back on the TD Garden ice Sunday afternoon shooting for a repeat title after handily defeating Danvers, 7-2, in the North final Monday night. For Burlington, having to grind out the semifinal win was appropriate, given its uphill journey. The turnaround, ironically, started against Winchester, a 3-0 win on Jan. 19. ( 03/14/2013 12:00 AM )
