St. John’s Prep soars

St. John’s Prep 3
Central Catholic 1

STONEHAM — The MIAA website said Friday night’s game at Stoneham Arena was supposed to feature Central Catholic vs. St. John’s Prep in Super 8 action. What the game turned out to be was St. John’s Prep vs. Colin Soucy.

Not surprisingly, the Eagles were too much for Soucy. Although the Raiders goalie made 39 saves, two got by him and that was enough to allow St. John’s Prep to win, 3-1, and tie the best-of-three series.

“ He was unbelievable. [Soucy] gave us every chance to win tonight. I can’t say enough good things about him,” Raiders coach Mike Jankowski said after the loss.

Soucy’s performance did not go unnoticed by the opposing coach, either.

“He had some of the best saves I’ve seen all season tonight. He’s one of the best goalies in the game,” St. John’s Prep coach Kristian Hanson said of the junior.

Central Catholic was unable to get anything going offensively, with only Lloyd Hayes’s shorthanded goal going through on 12 shots. With little offensive help, Soucy was on his own to keep the Raiders competitive.

After a scoreless first period, Hayes scored in the eighth minute of the second period, but it would be all Eagles from there on. Justin Longo answered 20 seconds later to tie it for St. John’s Prep.

The Eagles scored on Soucy once more in the game, with Nic Gianelli scoring at 5:20 into the third period.

Jack McCarthy scored the Eagles’ third goal into an empty net with more than a minute left.

The Raiders and Eagles will meet for Game 3 on Sunday at Stoneham Arena. The winner advances to face Austin Prep in the semifinals.

“I think [Central Catholic] is better than an eight seed and we haven’t played like the No. 1 seed. We’ve done nothing yet, we won one game,” said Hanson.

Jankowski’s hoping the Raiders can find the form that helped them to a 4-1 upset in Game 1.

“We need to go back to what we did in the first game,’’ he said. “We’ve got to start from our own zone and work up from there.’’
