At South Kent School, the star hockey attraction is defenseman Anthony Florentino, who attracted pro scouts to every game. But the team’s goalie, after a nine-month workout program, has been attracting some attention, too.
Shane Starrett, a Bellingham native, has worked himself up to No. 15 in the NHL rankings among North American goaltenders. He attributes much of his success to late-night workouts with his roommate, Florentino.
“Once I saw my teammates were ranked, I started thinking about it a lot more,” Starrett said. “I realized this was something I really wanted. I wanted to be there too.”
“The hard work he put in over the last year put him here,” said South Kent coach Matt Plante. “He really put himself on the map.”
