Malden Catholic tops Springfield Cathedral in Super 8 semifinals

LOWELL — For the fourth straight season, the road the Super 8 championship game will go through Malden.

Three-time defending champion Malden Catholic clamped down on Springfield Cathedral, riding its solid defense to a 3-1 victory in Thursday’s semifinal game at the Tsongas Center.

“The last time we played them [a 5-2 loss in the last regular-season game] we tried to match lines and I didn’t think we played our game,” said MC coach John McLean. “So [tonight] we just rolled our three lines, made sure we kept our third guy high and I thought in the third period we kind of wore them down a little bit.”
