WORCESTER — St. Mary’s coach Jeff Newhall had a strong message for his Spartans at halftime.
Holding a 34-17 lead over Hoosac Valley in the Division 3 final at the DCU Center Saturday, St. Mary’s had no plans of letting its foot off the gas. No first-half lead in a state final is safe, and the Spartans were aware of that.
“You’re 16 minutes away from the state title,” Newhall said to his team. “You cannot go out in the beginning of the third quarter with no sense of urgency and allow them back in the game.”
His players listened.
By opening the second half with a furious 11-0 run and outscoring Hoosac, 29-6, in the third quarter, the Spartans cruised to a 74-36 triumph.
