After Round 1, it's advantage Catholic Memorial.

The latest installment in the state's marquee high school hockey matchup -- CM vs. BC High -- produced the raw skill, emotion, and requisite controversy that have helped it draw comparisons to heavyweight bouts.

No. 3 CM skated past top-ranked BC High, 2-1, in a typically tight game between the rivals last night at Conte Forum. CM's second goal initially was waved off before being restored for a score.

The goal, by junior forward Mike Collins, came with just one second left in the second period as he reached from behind the BC High net to stuff it in. After it was ruled the puck had not crossed the goal line, the two officials spoke with CM coach Bill Hanson and reversed the decision as the teams were headed to their locker rooms.

The Eagles weren't happy with the decision.

"The [final] score should have been 1-1; I think it's a 1-1 game," BC High coach Joe McCabe said. "When you wave off a goal, you can't go over to the CM bench and make another decision. You can't do that. The official waved it off and he was the guy behind the goal line. He should have the best view there. The game shouldn't be decided like that."

Hanson, whose team was eliminated by BC High in the Super 8 final last March, saw it a little differently.

"You guys saw that," he said of the goal, which was initially put on net from the left circle by Bryan Rosata. "That was clearly a goal. The ref showed a lot of [guts] doing that. He did the right thing. That was clearly a goal."

The differing opinions were indicative of the contest, which went down to the wire.

The Eagles (4-2) controlled the majority of the first period, but couldn't take advantage of a series of breakaways and odd-man rushes.

"They're much more physical than we are," Hanson said of the Eagles. "They banged the hell out of us and we didn't respond. We don't have the type of physical presence that they do. What we have to do is use our skill and get some puck luck."

They did, even though it took until the second period.

CM (5-0) scored first with 8:59 left in the middle frame when senior defenseman Mike Keenan chipped in the puck while Eagles junior goaltender Joe Cannata was sprawled on the ice.

Collins's goal made it a two-goal advantage, but BC High responded early in the third.

Just 1:06 in, senior defenseman Bryan Kelly fed rushing junior defenseman Casey Shaughnessy on a two-on-one break. Shaughnessy broke past the CM defender, and lifted a shot to the top of the net.

"Hopefully we'll learn from this," McCabe said. "It's a bump in the road and hopefully we'll respond, get back to business, and get back to where we were early in the year."
