Abby Gauthier's hockey sense and quick speed were on display last night in Watertown. The St. Mary's standout scored and added four assists to lead the Spartans to a 7-3 win over Boston Latin in the Division 1 girls' quarterfinals.

No. 1 St. Mary's (23-0-0) fell in a 1-0 hole early. Wolfpack senior captain Ann-Marie Elvin maneuvered from right to left, tricking St. Mary's goalie Kelsey Magrane and poking in the puck. But at 4:05, the Spartans responded, Gauthier setting up the first of Courtney Winters's three goals.

"For some reason we just came out flat in the first five minutes," said St. Mary's coach Frank Pagliuca. "Once we settled down and started to do the things we're expected to do on the ice, we took some advantages of opportunities and that's good to see."

From that point, the Spartans dominated, getting scores from Courtney White (one goal, one assist) and Gauthier to go up, 3-1.

Boston Latin's Siobhan Elvin made 51 saves.

The Wolfpack (14-4-3) got late goals from Stephanie McGrath and Kathleen Roche.

"They're a very good team; they should do well [in the tournament], and they just kept coming at us," said Boston Latin coach Marty McDonough.

"Siobhan had a lot of pressure back there. [St. Mary's] played good, they know the game, they're coached well, and they're aware of where that puck should go at all times."

The Spartans will play a semifinal game Wednesday.

Division 1 North: Junior Kim Hayward had 28 saves in Arlington's 2-0 shutout of Lexington. Sophomore twins Emily and Kylee Sullivan each scored.

Boys
NEPSAC Division 2: Nick Maggio scored the winning goal in overtime to give New Hampton a 2-1 semifinal win over Roxbury Latin.

Division 1 North: Austin Prep's David McDonald scored his 19th goal of the year and notched his 100th career point in a 2-1 shootout win over Andover.
