Things looked bleak for the Catholic Memorial boys’ basketball team midway through the third quarter last night against St. John’s Prep.

The undefeated Eagles had scored the first 9 points of the half, and held a 48-30 lead.

But then it started raining 3-pointers.

Catholic Memorial hit 10 of its 14 treys in the second half to stun the No. 3 Eagles, 84-79, in Danvers.

Senior Dan Brooks led the Knights’ attack with 27 points, while sophomore Dan Powers chipped in 18.

“I told my team that we would have to play our best game in order to beat them,’’ Knights coach Denis Tobin said. “With the way we shot the ball, we finally clicked on all cylinders. That’s the only way you can beat a team like that.’’

Junior Pat Connaughton was stellar in defeat with 33 points and 15 rebounds.

CM (10-5, 6-1 Catholic Conference) got back into the game largely because of its dead-eye shooting and pressure defense. The Knights’ full-court press helped them claw back within 59-53 entering the fourth.

“We were a little erratic against the pressure,’’ Prep coach Sean Connolly said. “Hopefully we can learn from it, because there’s a lot of stuff we need to correct.’’

The win was the Knights’ sixth in a row, and forced a tie with Prep atop the conference.
