Arlington Catholic gains upper hand on Spartans
Up against a familiar foe, Arlington Catholic coach Dan Shine knew there would be no surprises. In the end, it would come down to the team that made the most of its opportunities.
Relying heavily on his first line - seniors Paul Kehoe, John Needham, and Michael Settipani -- the Cougars edged rival St. Mary’s of Lynn, 2-1, last night in the Division 1 North hockey final at Chelmsford Forum in Billerica.
Arlington Catholic, back-to-back Division 2 North champions, capitalized on 2 of 3 power-play opportunities, and the Spartans came up empty on five man-advantages.
“The first line played huge,’’ Shine said. “They were the difference, our go-to line, and we rode them. There was a lot of emotion coming into the game - a lot of history. We answered the bell.’’
The squads have become bitter rivals. In a midseason meeting, an altercation broke out during the postgame handshakes.
The Cougars controlled play for much of the first period. Capitalizing on their first power-play opportunity, Kehoe netted a stick-side wrist shot for a 1-0 lead.
In the second, Kehoe scored on a one-timer off a cross-crease feed from Needham.
The Spartans, who had three power plays in the period, only pressured goaltender Cam Kelley (20 saves) in the closing seconds.
St. Mary’s narrowed the deficit 2:14 into the third. Junior forward Julian Yourowski stuffed a rebound past Kelley’s glove from close range.
Momentum seemed in St. Mary’s favor when the Cougars were whistled for interference. But once again, the Spartans power play came away empty.
“We really controlled play in the first and third periods,’’ Shine said. “Our early power-play goals really set the tone. It just was enough. [Kelley] was spectacular and we did a fine job killing power plays.’’
Marblehead 4, Concord-Carlisle 2 - Two years ago, Marblehead defeated Concord-Carlisle, the highest seed in Division 3 North, in the sectional finals. Last night they did it again.
After a commanding third-period performance, third-seeded Marblehead handed the Patriots their first loss of the season in a 4-2 victory at Chelmsford Arena for the boys’ North sectional crown.
“Our kids just started to believe in themselves,’’ Marblehead coach Bob Jackson said. “When you believe in yourself, and you pull together, good things happen.’’
Stifling defense kept the game scoreless in the first period, with each goalie facing only a handful of shots.
Offense prevailed in the second, with each team trading goals. Marblehead’s Austin Haley drew first blood, and Tyler Gelineau scored later in the period. Rob Snook and Justin Harris found the net for the Patriots.
Early in the third period, Marblehead took a 3-2 lead after converting a textbook breakout. Gelineau found Hunter Graves in the neutral zone, who sprinted in on a breakaway.
“I was just staying wide, and [Gelineau] hit me with a perfect pass, and I just cut to the middle and I saw the top corner and it went in,’’ Graves said.
The line of Graves, Gelineau, and Haley combined for three goals and four assists.
Concord-Carlisle pulled goalie Steven Saul with just over a minute left in the third period, but Marblehead’s Ryan Dempsey scored into an empty net.
Marblehead will face the winner of today’s semifinal between Ashland and Scituate Wednesday at Harvard.
Golner, who has won four Division 3 state titles and is considered one of the best wrestlers in Massachusetts history, beat Stephen Rich of Spaulding (Vt.), 3-1, for the 160-pound title. Golner’s teammate Matt Donohoe lost at 152 pounds to Dracut’s Matt Dehney, 5-3.
Burlington sent three wrestlers to the tournament, but only Matt Sherman took home a title, defeating Malden Catholic’s Devin Visconti, 2-1, at 135. Sherman’s twin brother Jake lost at 125 pounds to Mike Meyers of Warwick, and teammate Kevin Barucci was defeated by Franklin’s Dan Telhada, 7-4, at 145 pounds.
Haverhill captured two individual titles, as Isaiah Williams won at 171 pounds and teammate Terrence Jean-Jacques beat Weymouth’s Dan Murphy, 2-1, in overtime to win the 285-pound title.
At 112, Newton North’s Sam Shames defeated Brad Myers of Lowell, 7-4, and Danbury’s Charlie Costanzo captured the 119-pound title. Other winners were Framingham’s Nick Flannery (130), Needham’s Jordan Michelson (140, by a pin), and Shawsheen’s Alex Najjar (189, with a 4-3 victory over Winchester’s Greg Kelley).
