Before every game, you will find Wakefield girls hockey team senior captain Colleen Doucette and her teammates crouched in the locker room looking for inspiration.
That inspiration comes from a recording of some of the film industrys most renowned pre-game speeches, with coaches such as Herb Brooks in Miracle proclaiming, This is your time, so go ahead and take it.
I have a lot of superstitions so I always have to do pre-game stuff, said Doucette. That gets us pumped, and then on the ice I talk in our circle before giving the 1, 2, 3.
Whether it is the Warriors newfound tradition, which also includes speeches from Remember the Titans, or the maturity in their roster, coach Jack Foleys girls are accepting the task - to fight.
That fight was just enough to beat the top-ranked team in the state, Woburn.
When looking at the numbers, Wakefield did not match up. The record, the offense, the defense, and the history sided with Woburn.
But, the Wakefield girls laced up their skates with Woburns best and brought fire from beginning to end to ice over and outshoot their Middlesex rival, 32-21.
Woburn had the early edge with a second-period goal from leading scorer Kayla Smith (21 goals, 17 assists) to lead, 1-0. The Warriors tied it 40 seconds later with a shorthanded goal from Doucette, and received the go-ahead score later in the second from senior defender Samantha Morris.
It was still a battle and we didnt roll over and quit. The kids had to keep skating hard, said Foley.
Were never comfortable with a lead. We knew wed have to try our hardest to get the win and we didnt want to let up at all, said Doucette.
Early in the third period, Doucette scored a power-play goal to go up, 3-1. Woburn closed to 3-2 on Emily Lissners tally but Wakefield held on.
The win was not only a huge morale booster for the Warriors, but it was a notable moment for Doucette, who scored against Woburn her freshman year, the last time the Warriors toppled the Tanners.
Its good to leave knowing I beat Woburn. Its our biggest rivalry, Doucette said.
That is not the only notch Doucette has on her belt.
The four-year varsity starter entered this season with 109 points, and now has 143 (58 goals, 85 assists).
I love getting numbers but for me its not just about the goal. I honestly would rather get the assist than the goal, said Doucette.
I consider myself a playmaker and I pride myself in helping someone get a beautiful goal, she said.
Doucette started off strong her freshman year and has only gotten better on Foleys top line and as an all-league player the past two years.
Shes sort of the heart and soul of team, said Foley.
Doucette currently leads her team with 15 goals and 19 assists.
She leads by example, she plays hard, and has done a great job, he said.
Doucette participates in a summer lifting program for strength and comditioning, along with showcases and developmental camps. She also plays for the Middlesex Islanders in the fall and has that physical component that gives her an edge on the ice after practicing with boys hockey.
Although the Warriors have a small 12-man roster, the weight is in the upperclassmen who have piloted the team to a 6-6-2 record, a significant improvement from last years 4-13-1 record.
It was definitely a confidence issue, said Doucette. We needed to rebuild and get confidence back. We cannot play as individuals but we need to play as a team.
At 14 points and with six games to go, the Warriors appear prepared to fight like they did against Woburn and solidify their defensive zone to snatch a berth in the postseason tournament.
Its a matter of how well we play in our own end to give ourselves better chances of winning. They cannot take any opponent lightly, said Foley.
Games of the Week
No. 17 Fontbonne at No. 10 Hingham, Mon. 5 p.m. - This season has not been the Ducks finest with five losses. If they cannot compete against Hingham, their slot in the Top 20 looks grim. The Ducks have had some sore luck against Division 1s best teams, having already lost to Hingham, 5-3.
No. 3 Arlington Catholic at No. 5 St. Marys, Wed., 4:30 p.m. - St. Marys ended Arlington Catholics 14-game unbeaten streak earlier and this is the rematch. Despite a sloppy start, St. Marys has left its mark in Division 1 with Alison Butlers rocket of a shot, punching in a spot in the tournament.
No. 15 Wellesley at No. 8 Norwood, Wed., 4:30 p.m. - This will be a challenging matchup as the Bay State Herget contenders meet again after posting a 2-2 tie earlier this season.
No. 1 Duxbury at No. 11 Barnstable, Wed., 5 p.m. - Duxbury served Barnstable its second loss of the season earlier, 4-0. Barnstable has performed well against several top teams, so well see if the second time around it can get better scoring chances.
No. 6 Walpole at No. 19 Dedham, Sat., 3:30 p.m. - Walpole is undefeated in league play and dished out a 5-2 victory over Dedham earlier this season. Walpole will certainly be a team to watch in tournament play.![]()
