Needing seven points over its last six games to make the playoffs, the 11th-ranked Catholic Memorial boys’ hockey team allowed a late goal to top-ranked Malden Catholic and came away with a 2-2 tie last night at Valley Forum II in Malden.
As the Lancers worked the puck around the Knights’ zone, Casey Fitzgerald slid the puck to Brendan White, who fired a shot from the left point that was redirected by Mike Iovanna with 1:43 left to play, allowing the Lancers to escape with a tie.
“They’re good, there’s just no getting around it,’’ said CM coach Bill Hanson. “We needed to steal a point and we did. It could be big.’’
The Lancers jumped out of the gate early and picked up the first goal at the 2:57 mark of the first period when Brendan Collier picked off the puck in the neutral zone, flew up the left side and backhanded it to Ryan Fitzgerald, who buried his fourth goal in two games.
The Lancers outshot the Knights, 31-7, over the first two periods, but the score remained 1-0 heading into the third thanks to goalie Shane Starrett (41 saves), who came up with big save after big save to keep CM alive.
The Knights came out with more purpose in the third and Liam Coughlin’s goal at 5:47 gave CM new life.
By the time Thomas Stanton banged home the go-ahead goal with just 2:56 left in the game, it seemed as if the Knights might just walk away with two points, especially with the Lancers unable to solve Starrett.
