Braintree squeezes win out of Weymouth
When Braintree, the 13th-ranked baseball team, allowed Weymouth to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, the Wamps didn't give in. And in the tightest spot of the game -- the top of the 13th inning -- Wamps coach Bill O'Connell had just the right player stride up to the plate. Sophomore Connor Columbus executed a "perfect" suicide squeeze, bunting the ball softly down the first-base line. Senior Alex Alexander, who led off the inning with a single before stealing second and reaching third on an error, scored the go-ahead run as the Wamps collected a 5-2 win at Weymouth.( 05/17/2013 9:51 PM )

Jake Jones, Springfield College classmates direct Marshfield lacrosse to 14-3 start
MARSHFIELD -- Jake Jones , Mike Smith and Greg Levings first met in the fall 0f 2005, as freshman at Springfield College, and they hit it off almost immediately. The three were all varsity athletes -- Jones and Smith played lacrosse while Levings golfed for the Pride -- and physical education majors who planned to coach as well as teach when they got out of school. What if they could do it together? Smith called the possibility "awesome" back then. Jones called it "a pipe dream." Now, though, they just call it reality. After directing the Marshfield High boys to an 11-9 finish in his first season a year ago, Jones added both Smith and Levings to his coaching staff. The result: a 14-3 start. ( 05/16/2013 1:20 AM )

Eileen Donahue has Watertown High girls' lacrosse setting high goals
It took a little while to believe. "If you came to the first practice of ours, you'd be like, 'Have they ever won one game?' " said Watertown High sophomore Allie Doggett. The previous two seasons, the Raider girls' lacrosse team had won 10 of their 34 games. Their confidence was about as full as an upside-down shampoo bottle: Whatever was in there, it wasn't much. But with Eileen Donahue taking over on the bench, perhaps everyone should have known better. The legendary field hockey coach has one way of doing things: all-in. The Raiders were 14-0 through Monday, having won 11 games by at least five goals. "I'm pleasantly surprised where we're at, knowing where we were at day one," said Donahue. ( 05/16/2013 1:18 AM )

Katie Notarangelo, Foxborough girls' lacrosse off to a flying start
FOXBOROUGH -- On a multi-use field tucked away on Payson Road, where the grass is a little too long and remnants of the long-closed state hospital stand eerily in the background, Katie Notarangelo put her scoring skills on showcase. The Foxborough High junior midfielder netted three goals. But it was her third tally in a 13-3 win last Friday, when she deked around a pair of King Philip defenders before snipping the lower left corner, that served as a highlight-reel moment in a season that has, so far, seen many. With a season and a half still ahead of her, Notarangelo recorded the 100th goal of her career. After garnering Hockomock League all-star honors last spring, Notarangelo is leading the 11-1 Warriors in goals (30). ( 05/09/2013 10:50 AM )

On a cool Sunday evening over on Turf 2 in back of Reading High, coach Charlie Hardy jumped in on a set with his offense, whizzing a pass through defenders right on target to a cutting attack, then backing up to reset into position. After giving a quick explanation to a few onlooking players, he jogged back to the sidelines to watch. "I can't help myself," said the 12-year coach, who started the program at Reading High. "When I'm out here, I'm 12 again. It's the best three hours of my day." With an experienced roster that features 18 seniors, including 15 that have played on a Super Bowl champion or a Super 8 entrant, the Rockets have rolled to an 10-1 start. ( 05/09/2013 10:45 AM )

Win at Medfield at game-changer for Dover-Sherborn boys' lacrosse
Trying to win a boys' lacrosse game as the visiting team at Medfield High is akin to trying to take the SATs in the front row of a rock concert. Each game is like its own festival. Music fills the field and blares beyond the bleachers. The music forms a sound that circles the field and extends farther than vision from the top row of the crowded bleachers.Entire families show up, chatting up other families, and they're waiting in long lines to buy burgers. And then the players come out. And they stomp their cleats on the bleachers and they run down from the stands onto the field amid a background of babel. to a background of what appears to be endless, unidentifiable noise. The Dover-Sherborn Raiders took a bus into Medfield on Friday night, the night of April 26. They Raiders watched the spectacle. Then they won the game, 6-3, beating the Warriors on Medfield property for the first time ever. ( 05/09/2013 1:15 AM )
