Katie Notarangelo scores 100th as Foxboro girls lacrosse routs King Philip, 13-3
The host Foxboro girls' lacrosse team defeated King Philip, 13-3, Friday, but there was something off about coach Brittany Jamieson-Sherry's squad. Then the coach subbed out junior midfielder Katie Notarangelo, the team's leading scorer, midway through the second half. "It's in your head and it's in everyone else's head," Jamieson-Sherry told Notarangelo on the sidelines. "Go in there and get it over with." "It" was the 100th goal of Notarangelo's scholastic career, and after finding the back of the net twice in the first 30 minutes of play she was sitting on 99. With 13:11 to go, she took a pass in the middle of the field, deked around a pair of KP defenders and put the ball in the lower left corner for the hat trick.( 05/03/2013 9:24 PM )

Hopkinton High girls' lacrosse following lead of coach Jodi Dolan
Earlier in her coaching career, Jodi Dolan, admittedly, would not have known what to do when word of the Boston Marathon bombing reached the practice field behind Hopkinton High on that tragic Monday afternoon. She probably would have just yelled a little bit louder, demanded her players focus a little bit harder. "I've learned the hard way over the years," said Dolan, the varsity girls' coach at Hopkinton since the program's inception in 2001. "When you got the extra mile for your players, they will for you too - on the field." Each one of her team captains this season can recall a "Jodi Moment," an instance on the field that might have been difficult to go through, but only made them better afterward. Ben Lodge has backstopped Canton High boys' lacrosse to a 7-0 start
Half-jokingly, Ben Lodge suited up in goalie gear and jumped into net, facing shots from a collection of 11-year-olds one day last summer, part of a weeklong clinic run by Canton High boys' lacrosse coach Bill Bendell. "Hey, be careful," Bendell told Lodge, fully aware that he did not have a returning goalie this spring. "You're going to really play yourself into that role." One month and eight games -- all wins -- into the 2013 season, Lodge has seized the position. The slender 6-foot-2, 165-pound junior boasts a stellar 4.8 goals-against average and .723 save percentage for the Bulldogs, who sit atop the Hockomock League's Davenport Division. Canton has already topped its win total of a year ago, a 7-11 season that ended with a 5-4 loss to Weston in the preliminary round of the tournament. ( 05/02/2013 1:19 AM )

North Andover girls' lacrosse following the lead of freshman goalie Lauren Hiller
NORTH ANDOVER - Her helmet still strapped on her head, Lauren Hiller was sitting in the corner of the field with her rest of her North Andover teammates, quietly waiting for the postgame chat from coach Karen Murdoch-Lahey after a convincing 18-8 win over Chelmsford. After the Scarlet Knights broke their huddle, the freshman goalie began answering questions, a bit nervous at first, a contrast to her poised play in the cage for 45 minutes. But as soon as the conversation turned from small talk to lacrosse, her head popped up, her eyes opened wide, and she relaxed. It was fitting. With the first-year goalie proving to be an anchor in the back, North Andover is quietly letting foes know that it is here to stay, off to a 9-1 start. ( 05/02/2013 1:18 AM )

St. John's Prep cruises by Xaverian, 7-3
St. John's Prep suffered its first and only loss of the season against Xaverian back on April 4. The No. 1 ranked Eagles did not let history repeat itself in the rematch with the Hawks on Wednesday, cruising to an easy 7-3 road victory in Westwood. St. John's Prep (12-1) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard lit up in this one. Nick Bragole drove a solo home run into the neighboring lacrosse field in the top of the first inning. The drive gave Eagles starter Brandon Bingel a lead to protect early and it was a lead he would not relinquish. The senior struck out seven over 5 2/3 innings of work and sat the Hawks down in order on three occasions. It was a much different outing than Bingel had a week ago against BC High.( 05/01/2013 11:00 PM )

Duxbury boys' lacrosse escapes from Hingham
As the battle for the league title heats up, every game is huge, but even more between conference rivals. On Hingham's turf, No. 2 Duxbury came away with an 8-7 overtime victory Tuesday to remain undefeated in the Patriot League. The Green Dragons are 8-4 overall, but all of their losses have come against out-of-state schools. "It was a huge win," Duxbury coach Chris Sweet. "It goes a long way towards winning the league. It's usually always a tight game [against Hingham]." The history between the two teams has created a bit of rivalry. Before 2000, the Green Dragons rarely beat Hingham, but in the last decade they've dominated the No. 11 Harbormen. At 2:51 of overtime, senior attackmen JC LoConte (two goals, two assists) netted a man-up goal from 18 yards out for the win. "It's still such a heated rivalry," Sweet said. "But, it was a hard-fought game most importantly." ( 05/01/2013 7:35 AM )

Watertown girls' lacrosse off to a great start
he Watertown girls' lacrosse team might not have any superstar players or Division 1 college recruits, but there is a familiar face is on the sidelines this year. Eileen Donahue, a veteran field hockey coach at Watertown with over 500 career wins and 11 Division 2 state championships in her coaching career, took over as the girls' lacrosse head coach right before the start of the season. Only in its third year as a varsity program, the team is a mix of athletes from other sports, most of whom are learning lacrosse on the job. for the first time. "It's nice to see a different blend of players come together," said Donahue. "For many of them it's their first time playing together, let alone picking up a stick." ( 04/29/2013 12:00 AM )

Wilmington delivering big-time in boys' lacrosse
Bringing back all but one starter from last year, Wilmington boys' lacrosse coach Kieran Kavanaugh was optimistic about the Wildcats' chances as he began his second season. After a 9-0 start, it's obvious that confidence was well-founded. Kavanaugh wanted to see his team improve on the defensive end, and so far it's mission accomplished. "Everyone is buying in," Kavanaugh said. "We only graduated one starter last year and our lines are meshing really well. We have a lot of veterans on the field who work hard, which helps in improving the younger kids." Senior captain Eric Jaeschke is one of those veteran players. "Eric is a tremendous leader," said Kavanaugh. "He's the leader of our defense." ( 04/28/2013 11:11 PM )

Hingham beats St. John's Prep, 9-5, in boys' lacrosse
Hingham coach John Todd went into Saturday's boys' lacrosse game against St. John's Prep stressing one factor -- defense. It resulted in a hard-fought 9-5 victory over the visiting Eagles. With such close records, he knew that the victory was a tossup between his team and the visiting Eagles (6-2). By placing his efforts on defense, the Harbormen (7-2) were able to walk away with a 9-5 win, although it wasn't an easy victory. "We had to play all four quarters in this game," Todd said. "We couldn't take any time off or [St. John's Prep] would make us pay." Despite the Eagles' best efforts, the The Harbormen quickly took the lead. Hingham was up by two scored twice in the first 10 minutes, but until St. John's Prep came back with a goal, answered to make it 2-1 after ending the first quarter. up, 2-1. The Harbormen never gave up the lead, but St. John's Prep put up a fight. Todd credited Hingham's lead to senior goalkeeper Tommy Bannan and defenders Chris Fitzgerald, Jack Ullrich, and John Melia with maintaining the lead. ( 04/28/2013 7:16 AM )

As a 6-0 pitcher who is 6-0 with a 0.19 ERA, Julia Sullivan rarely makes has a misstep. Bridgewater-Raynham boys' lacrosse following lead of senior captains to a 7-1 start
BRIDGEWATER -- Matt Connolly came away from the first sitdown with his captains-elect last June with a huge sense of relief. Connolly, the boys' lacrosse coach at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional, felt that he, along with his rising senior leaders -- midfielders Anthony Gallo and Tim O'Connor, goalie Matt LaFond, and defender Ryan Murphy -- were all on the same page. The Trojans were coming off a 7-12 season, including a first-round playoff loss. With a team motto of "getting the most by giving the most," the Trojans (7-1) are off to the best start in the program's five-year history, averaging 13 goals per game. B-R won seven straight games before losing to a quick Wayland High team, 5-2, on Saturday. ( 04/25/2013 1:13 AM )

Newton North boys' lacrosse is back on the offensive
NEWTON - Bussy Adam wouldn't say the lacrosse is necessarily better at Newton North now than it has been recently. He's only certain about two things: One, this Tigers squad can score goals unlike any team in recent memory. And two, he's having a heck of lot of fun coaching right now. Given the theory that defense wins championships - a theory with flaws that the Tigers exposed last year, when they were ousted in the first round of the Division 1 East tournament despite having the 11th best defense in Eastern Massachusetts - Adam, in his 35th season at Newton North, responds with a new philosophy. "Well, the best defense is a good offense," he says. ( 04/25/2013 1:13 AM )

Westford Academy boys' lacrosse stepping up to face challenges
In the midst of a tight game against Reading High Saturday afternoon, Westford Academy senior captain Jack Drapeau limped off the field with a sprained ankle. In a matter of moments, the defensive wheels started to slip off the Grey Ghost wagon, ulitmately resulting in a 12-7 loss. It's a microcosm of the season thus far for the Westford Academy boys: struggling with adversity, and stepping up in the face of those challenges. Last season, the Grey Ghosts put together a 14-4 regular-season to earn the seventh seed in the Division 1 East tourney. A season later, Westford is back for more, but not before going through the trials of a regular season first. Through nine games, the Grey Ghosts were 7-2, sitting third in the Dual County League Large behind Newton South and Acton-Boxborough. ( 04/25/2013 1:13 AM )

Xaverian's Alex Person no-hits Brockton
Last year, Alex Person had two complete-game victories pitched a pair of complete game victories in the MIAA baseball tournament to help boost Xaverian to the Division 1 title. On Monday, Person was even more impressive, had an equally impressive performance no-hitting Brockton on 96 pitches as the 14th-ranked No. 14 Hawks (5-4) won, 6-0, at home. The senior righthander struck out 12 and walked two in improving to 2-0 on the year. "[Alex] was in charge all day long," said Xaverian coach Gerry Lambert. "He was getting ahead and his fastball was good." Lambert usually eases his pitchers into the season, and even with a no-hitter going he was still cautious with Person. "Going into the seventh inning I told him one hit or two base runners and I'm coming to get you," said Lambert. Person responded by retiring the side in order via a strikeout and a pair of ground outs. to finish the no-hitter.( 04/23/2013 12:00 AM )
