Although most high school games were canceled because of cold, rainy weather yesterday, Andover and Xaverian hooked up in a heated boys' lacrosse battle at Andover. Xaverian came out on top, 12-7, after rifling off quick goals to begin both halves.
No. 3 Xaverian (9-2) struck first as Chris Rigoli and Mark Whalen netted unassisted tallies in the opening minute and the Hawks were ahead, 3-1, by the end of the first quarter. No. 13 Andover cut the lead to 4-3 when Matt Erikson connected on a Brendan Hughes pass. But Xaverian pulled away on goals from Garrett Buckley and James Vickery to go ahead, 6-3, by halftime.
The Hawks opened the second half with another pair of punches, bumping the advantage to 8-3 off goals from Rigoli.
"It's really something that we have worked on, starting the game quickly and starting the second half quickly," said Xaverian coach Tim Gardner.
