No. 3 St. John's Prep continued its scorching start to the season by defeating No. 4 Xaverian, 10-4, in its home opener.
The final score was perhaps even flattering to Xaverian, as the Eagles had built a 4-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and an 8-1 advantage at the half.
"We really clicked early," said Prep coach John Roy. "Eight to one at halftime is a really big cushion, it was nice."
Led by attackmen Garrett Campbell and John Jennings, who had three goals and two assists each, the Eagles' offense put the pedal down early.
In addition to the offensive power, the Eagle defense was on the top of its game as well. Nick Valenti, the Eagle's senior goalie made several big stops, but none bigger than the play he made with 2:20 remaining in the half.
After robbing a Xaverian forward from about eight feet out, Valenti saw an opportunity and quickly swung it speedy midfielder Brian Keenan who started a fast break that led to Jenning's second goal.
"The talk at halftime was about keeping the momentum going," said Roy, whose team improved to 5-0. "But we knew it would be a battle, in this conference and they came out hard in the second half."
Xaverian stymied the Hawks' attack and netted two goals, including a Garrett Buckley strike as the quarter ended that cut the score to 8-4.
But the Eagles made it a five-goal lead with a man advantage with 10:31 left to play, and although Kevin Saccone responded quickly for Xaverian, it was not enough.
Jennings finished his hat trick less than a minute later after faking the Xaverian goaltender nearly out of the net.
The Prep will play at Hingham tomorrow morning at 11, while Xaverian, who dropped to 5-2, will return home to face Lexington Monday at 4 p.m.
