Even when the bats weren't working, the Catholic Memorial baseball team found a way to stay undefeated.
The ninth-ranked Knights continued their early success by defeating No. 13 Franklin, 5-0, yesterday afternoon at CM High School.
Catholic Memorial improved to 5-0, while Franklin fell to 3-3.
Both teams struggled offensively, with CM holding a 3-2 advantage in hits. But the Knights were able to take advantage of a few key mistakes by Franklin en route to the win.
"We didn't hit great," CM coach Hal Carey said. "But we had some good base running in the third, and we were able to score a few runs."
The Knights got things going in the bottom of the second. Shortstop Anthony Peguero doubled to left and stole third. He came home with the first run on an errant throw after a fly ball to Panthers right fielder Colin Gay.
Catholic Memorial broke it open in the third. Second baseman Devan Jones came home on a double steal, and a throwing error by Panthers starter Tony Trafecanty plated John Gorman for a 3-0 lead. Matt Goreham's double to center brought home Brian Glasheen and Peguero, and CM held a 5-0 edge.
"We played our worst defensive game of the year today," Franklin coach Dave Niro said. "Neither team hit very well. It was an ugly game."
The Knights' Phil Rossi cruised on the mound. Rossi (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven.
"He threw well," Carey said. "He's been solid so far, in two starts, and has come on in relief twice."
With victories over top-ranked Malden Catholic and tough opponents like Peabody, Brockton, and Central Catholic, the Knights appear primed to challenge for the Catholic Conference title this season.
"We're off to a good start," Carey said. "The kids are playing really well."
