Westwood’s Frank tops NDA’s Frank
When the game was all but won, Westwood midfielder Laura McHoul refused to let her team acknowledge victory.
“Don’t let up,’’ she yelled to the defense from midfield. “Don’t let up.’’
McHoul and fellow midfielder Kate Rich paved the way with nine goals combined, and junior Marina Burke added a hat trick as Westwood jumped to a 9-0 lead before cruising to an 18-8 victory over Notre Dame of Hingham in a Division 1 South girls’ lacrosse semifinal at Hingham.
“We tried as hard as we could to prepare ourselves to put our defenders in positions to be successful, but they can catch and throw just like any other team, and they were very on today,’’ said Notre Dame coach Meredith Frank. “They were finishing their shots.’’
In a match between second-year coach Meredith Frank and her mother, 14-year coach Leslie Frank, the Wolverines executed a nearly flawless game plan to keep a potent Notre Dame offense from getting the ball much of the afternoon.
In pressing the net, Westwood capitalized on two early free positions in the Cougars end and jumped to a 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.
Westwood dominated the faceoff circle in the first half, allowing them to relentlessly apply pressure on a taxed Cougar defense.
With a 6-0 lead with 7:20 to go in the first, Westwood put the game out of reach. Westwood scored three goals in 1:02 to open up a 9-0 lead with still 6:16 left in the first. McHoul scored the bookend goals.
