High school athletic fees increase
School Committee members approved an increase in high school athletic fees to $225 a year, from $150, for high school sports next school year. A cap for families was set at $450. All sports will fall under the fee, except for ice hockey, which will cost $400 a year for varsity (with a family cap of $800), and $325 for junior varsity JV hockey (family cap of $650 cap). Students involved solely in afterschool clubs and activities will still pay the $150 annual fee; those involved in both sports and clubs will have to pay only an athletic fee. According to School Committee chairwoman Shannon Hume, the increased fees will generate an additional $65,250 in annual revenue, with $14,720 to fund a strength trainer for student athletes. While the Braintree Athletic Association will no longer provide a $30,000 annual grant, Hume said, the group will continue to raise money for high school programs.( 06/30/2013 12:00 AM )

Lynn Post 6 dominating on the mound, sits atop District 8 standings
Timothy Fila has never seen his team off to a better start in his eight years managing the Lynn Post 6 squad. Going undefeated through its first six games certainly is a feat, but there was one thing in particular that stood out through those first half-dozen games: the team had not allowed a single earned run. "We're throwing strikes and not walking too many guys," Fila said before Tuesday's matchup against North Andover. "We've thrown 40-plus innings and only given up nine walks." Before Tuesday's game, Lynn had given up three unearned runs on the season and four of its six games were shutouts. Lynn finally surrendered its first loss of the summer on Tuesday to North Andover Post 219.( 06/30/2013 12:00 AM )

Siobhan McDonough of Andover gets ready to play for University of Pittsburgh
While Siobhan McDonough starred on the soccer pitch for Governor's Academy, she would often travel to Newton with her high school teammates to cheer on Boston College as the Eagles women soccer team easily dispensed of their opponents. The Andover native was awed by the talent in the ultra-competitive Atlantic Coast Conference, which sent nine teams to the NCAA championship tournament last season, including North Carolina, who won its 21st national title. What was once a dream is now a reality for McDonough, who is gearing up for her freshman campaign at the University of Pittsburgh, which split from the Big East conference and will officially join the ACC July 1.( 06/30/2013 12:00 AM )

Hudson Legion savoring undefeated start to season
It was getting late and the mosquitoes were biting, but Hudson Legion was in no hurry to leave Mahan Field. By beating Natick on Tuesday, 10-5, American Legion Post 100 had its sixth win in as many nights and basked in the glow of its undefeated 7-0 start. "I still look forward to coming everyday," said Sam Ashline with a smile. "That hasn't always been the case." Hudson has not had a winning season in manager Blair Brissette's nine years on the bench. But with three college players leading the way, a pitching staff rife with talented arms, and a lineup whose bats have warmed with the weather, the team is sitting atop the standings in District 5 and enjoying every second of the ride.( 06/30/2013 12:00 AM )

Southborough's Matt Karis sets the bar high for the Lexington Blue Sox
After tossing a complete game five-hit victory for the Lexington Blue Sox against the Intercity League defending champion Andre Chiefs, Southborough's Matt Karis made it home Tuesday in time to watch the College World Series."I was able to see the last six innings. If I'm not playing then I'm studying the game," said the 2011 Gettysburg College graduate who has been an elite pitcher in the amateur league since 2007. Over that span, he has gone 30-3-1 in the regular season with 209 strikeouts and just 45 walks in 232 innings with a 1.24 earned run average. He has posted an 8-1 record and 1.60 ERA in the post season for the Blue Sox.( 06/30/2013 12:00 AM )

Bellingham's Shane Starrett worked his way into NHL draft rankings
At South Kent School, the star hockey attraction is defenseman Anthony Florentino, who attracted pro scouts to every game. But the team's goalie, after a nine-month workout program, has been attracting some attention, too. Shane Starrett, a Bellingham native, has worked himself up to No. 15 in the NHL rankings among North American goaltenders. He attributes much of his success to late-night workouts with his roommate, Florentino. "Once I saw my teammates were ranked, I started thinking about it a lot more," Starrett said. "I realized this was something I really wanted. I wanted to be there too." "The hard work he put in over the last year put him here," said South Kent coach Matt Plante. "He really put himself on the map."( 06/29/2013 12:00 AM )

South defeats North, 13-6 in Agganis All-Star Classic
LYNN -- South coach Neal Weidman shuffled through a mix of quarterbacks before finally settling in with Brian Santry. It was crunch time, and Weidman had faith in the 6-foot quarterback from Swampscott. With 3:09 remaining on the clock and his team clinging to a 1-point lead, Santry delivered a 35-yard touchdown pass down the center of the field to Kyle Gotham of Revere to help the South defeat the North, 13-6, in the 52d annual Agganis All-Star Classic at Manning Bowl in Lynn Thursday night. Gotham burst through the up seam on a stick-and-go, and the South's North safety bit on the short route, leaving the 6-2 receiver wide open on the goal line.( 06/28/2013 12:00 AM )

Kristen Sarson: former Bedford High 3-sport captain tackling challenges with unbeaten Boston Militia
Five times per week, including practices and games, Kristen Sarson trades in her hard hat, protective boots and sampling containers for a football helmet, cleats and playbook. An environmental scientist at Littleton-based GeoInsight, the former three-sport captain at Bedford High is a starting inside linebacker and special teams player for the undefeated Boston Militia of the Women's Football Alliance. "I get kidded at work about how tough our game was that weekend based on how many bruises I have on my arms on Monday morning,'' said the 24-year-0ld Sarson, now in her third season with the Militia, who improved to 9-0 June 22 with a 63-28 playoff victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Passion at Somerville's Dilboy Stadium.( 06/27/2013 1:15 AM )

Boxford teen Anthony D'Ambrosio runs American Sign Language sports clinics
At 17, Anthony D'Ambrosio likes to take the initiative. While watching baseball or hanging out with friends are among his preferred activities, they are not what unlocks an infectious, almost contagious, enthusiasm from the rising senior at Phillips Andover Academy. But observe the Boxford resident running an American Sign Language (ASL) Sports baseball clinic -- part of a program he founded in 2008 as a seventh grader -- and the dichotomy of D'Ambrosio's boundless personality becomes obvious. He carries a composed CEO-like approach in which he constantly remains a step ahead of the day's itinerary contrasted with an energetic and compassionate individual engrossed in the activities alongside its participants. Through sports, D'Ambrosio's organization strives to positively impact the lives of the deaf, hard of hearing and/or others with physical or cognitive disabilities.( 06/27/2013 1:15 AM )

Shriners Football Classic a successful closing run for Blue Hills Regional's Vincent Burton
WALTHAM -- It had been a while since Vincent Burton had stepped onto the football field at Bentley -- one year, six months, and 19 days, to be exact -- but as soon as he arrived last weekend, the memories came flooding back. The 152 yards on 37 carries. The 1-yard rush for a touchdown that eventually stood as the game-winner. The hoisting of the Division 4A Super Bowl championship trophy after Blue Hills Regional's narrow 16-14 win over Cathedral. Sure, the atmosphere at Saturday's 30th Shriners Football Classic was a little different than it was on that chilly day in early December 2011 -- the weather was hot and hazy, the game merely an exhibition this time around -- but Burton enjoyed it just the same.( 06/27/2013 12:00 AM )

Bridgewater-Raynham, Hingham, Middleborough savor state baseball titles
LOWELL -- When the Bridgewater-Raynham baseball team shut out Nashoba Regional, 4-0, last Saturday afternoon, two of the program's most talented recent graduates, Mike Connolly and Eddie Campbell, also relished in the team's state championship glory. "I'm so happy for them," said Connolly, whose brother, Jack, a sophomore righthander, was an integral member of the team's pitching staff. Connolly went to all of the team's postseason games after wrapping up his junior season at the University of Maine, and the Division 1 final was no different. Campbell, however, selected in the 15th round of Major League Baseball's First-Year Player Draft, signed with the Seattle Mariners two days before the championship game, so he was not in attendance at LeLacheur Park. Instead, he bugged Connolly for near-constant text updates.( 06/23/2013 1:19 AM )

Walpole High grad J.P. Songin still a big hit in Park League at 36
J.P. Songin is a perennial all-star in the Boston Park League. The former Walpole High star also has a love-hate relationship with baseball. "I love the game, especially hitting,'' said the 36-year-old Norwood resident, a player-manager for the Palmer Club, "and I hate to strike out.'' That motivation, according to league records kept since the 2007 season, has indeed brought out the best in Songin, who has fanned just 33 times in his last 651 at-bats while hitting .346. His great uncle, the late Ed 'Butch' Songin, called signals for the original Boston Patriots. His uncle Tom Songin starred on the diamond and the ice at Boston College and skated for the Bruins. And his late grandfather Wally was a superb all-around athlete.( 06/23/2013 1:19 AM )

For DiSarcinas, the next generation, baseball is still a passion
BILLERICA - For three generations, baseball has been an integral part of the DiSarcina family dynamic. Like his older brother, Gary, a 12-year big league shortstop with the Angels now the manager of the Pawtucket Red Sox, Glenn DiSarcina starred on the diamond at Billerica Memorial High before continuing his baseball career at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Now two younger DiSarcinas are preparing to begin their collegiate careers on the diamond. This fall, Glenn and Peggy's son, Cam, a recent graduate of the Groton School, will attend Merrimack College and, play baseball. Meanwhile, his cousin, recent Billerica High grad Tommy Zarro -- the oldest child of John and Jean Marie, the sister of Gary and Glenn -- is headed to the University of Southern Maine to play ball.( 06/23/2013 1:18 AM )

Milford's Smith leads the charge in spring sports
It's hardly surprising that the most dominant team this of the spring was led by the most dominant athlete. Milford pitcher Shannon Smith led the Scarlet Hawks to their second straight softball state championship, going 25-1 with a .045 ERA. And that's no slip of the decimal point, as the Kentucky-bound righthander allowed just two runs all year. Milford finished No. 1 in the final Globe Top 20, one of four final Top 20 rankings out today Sunday, along with the final Top 10 for boys' volleyball. In leading Milford to the state championship, Smith also earned her third straight Gatorade Player of the Year award. Connecticut senior All-Stars defeat Massachusetts baseball team
In one of the last high school baseball games of the 2013 season, the Connecticut senior All-Star team defeated Massachusetts' squad 2-1 at Tufts University's Huskins Field. The home field advantage was not enough for Massachusetts to win Saturday's pitching duel in coach Pete Moscariello's last game before retirement. The Reading skipper coached the Massachusetts All-Stars with his entire Rockets staff. Going out with a loss didn't bring Moscariello down in the least. "I really appreciated the opportunity . . . it was really special. [North Reading's] Frank Carey is the one who called me and it was very thoughtful and kind. It was a nice way to end my career," said Moscariello.( 06/23/2013 1:10 AM )

South stars roll past North in Shriners Football Classic
WALTHAM -- For Alex Jette, who starred on the gridiron for North Attleboro in the fall, Saturday's 30th Annual Shriners All-Star Football Classic represented a bit of a conundrum: His red-and-white helmet, which he wore while playing for the South all-stars, had Hockomock League rival Mansfield's big green logo on it. "I got the Mansfield 'M' on there, and it was a little tough to put that one on," Jette said, unable to hold back a laugh. Jette, however, was able to put rivalries aside and the helmet -- and his receiving prowess -- to good use, corralling catching a touchdown pass in each half as the South beat the North All-Stars, 21-7, at Bentley University.( 06/23/2013 1:00 AM )

Two to share athletic director duties
Quincy public school officials have chosen two teachers to take on athletic director duties previously held by left behind by retiring director Jim Rendle, who is retiring as director. According to Superintendent Richard DeCristofaro, Quincy High math teacher Patrick Lane and North Quincy High English teacher Michael Joyce will work together to do the job.handling athletics at their respective schools and while jointly handling larger matters. "These experienced educators will assume the athletic director responsibilities at their respective high schools in addition to teaching three sections in their subject area," DeCristofaro said. "They will also work together to facilitate athletics programs at the middle school level." DeCristofaro noted that both teachers already had experience in school athletics. Joyce coached boys' lacrosse and acted as site supervisor for boys' and girls' basketball. Lane has been the wrestling coach since 2004. "Through their roles as teachers and coaches, both Mr. Joyce and Mr. Lane have developed a rapport with students and staff throughout the high schools," DeCristofaro said. Splitting responsibility strategy for the position is new for Quincy public schools, but administrators hope it will better integrate the athletic director job into with the student body of each high school.( 06/23/2013 12:00 AM )

Masconomet Regional grad Charlie May captures New England golf title
It had been nearly seven hours since Charlie May had teed off on the back nine at the Bretwood Golf Course in Keene, N.H., and after a one-hour, 15-minute rain delay, the recent Masconomet Regional graduate was finally standing on the green of the final hole. The 18-year-old Topsfield resident was staring at a 70-foot birdie putt that appeared first uphill and right-to-left, and then downhill and left-to-right, but he remained confident. With three golfers tied for first with a two-under-par 70, May was not about to play if safe. Milford, Assabet Valley softball programs state their case as champions
On the afternoon of April 29, Milford High softball coach Brian Macchi gathered his players at their lowest point of the season and urged them not to forget the feeling. The Scarlet Hawks had just lost to North Attleboro, 1-0, in 10 innings, the program's first loss in 35 games, but he insisted they turn their despair over a perfect season lost into something more positive. Milford (26-1) rolled off wins in its next 16 games, including a 1-0 victory in the Division 1 state championship game against Agawam last Saturday at Worcester State University to repeat as champions. The Assabet Valley softball team finished a historic season with its 5-2 win over St. Mary's of Lynn for the Division 3 state title -- the school's first in any team sport.( 06/23/2013 12:00 AM )

Keifer Heckman, Nick Ouellette power Peabody lacrosse to a strong finish
PEABODY -- In the opinion of his head coach, Tony O'Donnell, Keifer Heckman is the "greatest player to ever wear a Peabody lacrosse uniform." And in his final season, teamed up with his step brother, fellow captain Nick Ouellette, Heckman put together one heck of a season, powering the Tanners to an 11-9 finish. Although Peabody was ousted 11-6 in their tourney opener by Boston College High, a state semifinalist, it was a dramatic turnaround for a program that had compiled a 19-39 mark in its previous three seasons. Heckman and Nick Ouellette were determined to make a difference. "Captains were never really taken seriously," Heckman said. "We wanted to change that." The hard work paid off: the Tanners qualified for the tournament for the first time since 2009.( 06/20/2013 1:14 AM )

All-American goalie Ryan Goodall backstopped Dover-Sherborn lacrosse to a Division 3 repeat
Put aside the frantic final three minutes at Harvard Stadium last week, when the Dover-Sherborn boys nearly blew a five-goal lead with the Division 3 state title on the line. Go back to the second quarter, when the Raiders held Cohasset -- the highest-powered offense in Eastern Massachusetts during the regular season -- scoreless. The Dover-Sherborn defense played well, but the Skippers had some open looks on net. Some really good ones. "There was a flurry of great chances right there," coach Brian McLaughlin said after his squad hung on for a 12-10 win to capture a second consecutive Division 3 title. "And Ryan Goodall just put the kybosh on that." The senior is the third All-American goalie to suit up for the Raiders in the last seven years.( 06/20/2013 12:00 AM )

Xaverian Brothers, Notre Dame lacrosse: A season of firsts
The 2013 lacrosse was certainly an eventful one for high school programs south of Boston, with no shortage of thrills, drama, or disappointment. Xaverian Brothers and Notre Dame of Hingham hoisted state championship plaques for the first time. A pair of two-time defending champions, the Duxbury High boys and the Westwood High girls, were denied any shot at a repeat with tourney exits a bit earlier than anyone expected. And a few storylines emerged along the way. The lone captain at Xaverian, Liam Driscoll missed the entire regular season with a broken foot. But the senior middie suited up for the tournament and helped propel the Hawks to the Division 1 East title. After a week of rain that pushed back the Division 1 state girls' tennis final, both Acton-Boxboro and Longmeadow were eager to capitalize get on the court on Monday at St. John's High School in Shrewsbury. The delay worked in Acton-Boxboro's favor, as the Colonials rallied to defeat Longmeadow, 4-1, for its second straight championship. BC High boys edges St. John's Shrewsbury for Division 1 tennis title
WORCESTER -- A tournament season that seemed to have as many postponements as celebrations, survived another weather interruption Monday, but the wait was worth it for BC High, which beat St. John's of Shrewsbury, 3-2, in the Division 1 boys' state tennis final. "This match could have gone either way as both teams are very good," BC High coach Lance Hutchinson said. "If we played them 10 times they'd probably win five and we'd win five. They have a very good tennis team. Both teams are just so close. We have a lot of respect for them." The Pioneers battled against BC High but were eventually done in by first-year singles player Charles Shewalter, who edged four-time Central Mass. individual singles champion Chris Ellis to put his team over the top and claim a 3-2 victory in Monday's state final. Lowell Catholic caps thrilling run with Division 4 state title
Matt Stone arrived as the varsity baseball coach at Lowell Catholic last season and immediately went to work. After five seasons at the helm at Pelham (N.H.) High, he inherited a junior-heavy squad. One of those juniors, shortstop Craig Maxfield, rose up and stood out in a system in which a leadership role was anyone's to grab. For starters, Stone does not believe in captains. "I've never named captains; I like to let captains emerge," said Stone, now 33-12 in two seasons after piloting the Crusaders (19-5) to a thrilling 1-0 walkoff win over Pope John Paul II in the Division 4 state final Wednesday at Campanelli Stadium, the program's first championship. Acton-Boxborough softball captains: Finale not an easy routine
When the Acton-Boxborough Regional softball team lost in the Division 1 North semifinal to Newton North, 11-10, the players did what they did after every game, win or lose. Senior captains Hannah Graney, Kara O'Riley, Kirsten Pfister and Michelle Surdan were almost on autopilot. They had performed the same postgame ritual for the last three years under coach Mary Matthews: shake hands with opponents; thank umpires; line up on the edge of the outfield for sprints. But on the last night of their high school careers, there were no sprints, no more games for which to prepare. When the four captains met on the foul line in left field at Martin Field in Lowell, the finality of it all set in. They hugged. Tears flowed. ( 06/16/2013 1:15 AM )

Bridgewater-Raynham, Hingham, and Middleborough baseball receive superlative play from seniors
Brian McSherry received his diploma from Bridgewater-Raynham High two weeks ago, but he was not quite done leaving his mark on the Trojans' baseball program. In the fifth inning of the Division 1 state semifinal against Billerica Wednesday at Fraser Field in Lynn, McSherry sent a line drive to left-center to plate a pair, extending B-R's lead to three in the eventual 5-2 win. It was a signature moment for the senior first baseman who had been scuffling during the Trojans' run to the state championship game, one in a long list of momentous plays for McSherry and his classmates. For the Trojans, who missed the tournament completely in 2012 but played in their first Division 1 title game in a quarter-century Saturday, the road to success was paved by the 10-member class of 2013. Middleborough's Amber White delivered a winning pitch for Bridgewater State
Her 15-7 record, 20 complete games, eight shutouts, and 0.60 earned run average -- the third-lowest mark in Division 3 -- were spectacular. But go beyond those numbers, and you will uncover the true importance of Amber White to the women's softball program at Bridgewater State University. When the Bears need her the most, the junior pitcher from Middleborough delivered en route to earning Pitcher of the Year honors in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference. Bridgewater State, the regular season and tournament champion in the MASCAC, started 3-5 on its Florida trip and was 4-9 in its first 13 games. The Bears were also one game away from elimination in the MASCAC playoffs. A former standout at Middleborough High, White stepped into the circle at each crucial juncture and won every time.
