  • Katie Notarangelo scores 100th as Foxboro girls lacrosse routs King Philip, 13-3

The host Foxboro girls' lacrosse team defeated King Philip, 13-3, Friday, but there was something off about coach Brittany Jamieson-Sherry's squad. Then the coach subbed out junior midfielder Katie Notarangelo, the team's leading scorer, midway through the second half. "It's in your head and it's in everyone else's head," Jamieson-Sherry told Notarangelo on the sidelines. "Go in there and get it over with." "It" was the 100th goal of Notarangelo's scholastic career, and after finding the back of the net twice in the first 30 minutes of play she was sitting on 99. With 13:11 to go, she took a pass in the middle of the field, deked around a pair of KP defenders and put the ball in the lower left corner for the hat trick.(   05/03/2013 9:24 PM )

  • Maggie Hoffman of Avon notches 50th career win

Thursday's game might have looked like an easy victory for the Avon softball team, but it marked a milestone for senior Maggie Hoffman, who recorded her 50th career win in a 14-0 shutout against visiting Bristol County. "I work hard during the offseason and stay late at practice every day," Hoffman said, "I knew my 50th career win could come this year, so I've been working really hard to reach that." Hoffman struck out four, walked none, and contributed a home run and double as Avon improved to 12-1. "When I met Maggie she was in seventh grade and I thought she'd be good for JV," said Panthers coach Karen McCarthy. "Then I saw her pitch and said, 'You've got to be kidding me.' • Hopkinton High girls' lacrosse following lead of coach Jodi Dolan

Earlier in her coaching career, Jodi Dolan, admittedly, would not have known what to do when word of the Boston Marathon bombing reached the practice field behind Hopkinton High on that tragic Monday afternoon. She probably would have just yelled a little bit louder, demanded her players focus a little bit harder. "I've learned the hard way over the years," said Dolan, the varsity girls' coach at Hopkinton since the program's inception in 2001. "When you got the extra mile for your players, they will for you too - on the field." Each one of her team captains this season can recall a "Jodi Moment," an instance on the field that might have been difficult to go through, but only made them better afterward. • Andover High senior Mark Zavrl receives Courageous Award from state football coaches

Just hours after undergoing surgery to repair complete tears to the anterior cruciate, medial collaterial, and posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, Mark Zavrl was wheeled out to midfield on Oct. 12 to join his fellow Andover High football captains, in the pouring rain, for the coin toss before their game against Lawrence. On Thanksgiving morning, donning his blue and gold No. 33 Golden Warrior jersey, he walked out to midfield for the coin toss prior to Andover 's 22-19 playoff-clinching win over Central Catholic. On Sunday evening, Zavril was one of four seniors to receive the Paul Costello Courageous Player award at the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association's Hall of Fame banquet in Randolph. • Ben Lodge has backstopped Canton High boys' lacrosse to a 7-0 start

Half-jokingly, Ben Lodge suited up in goalie gear and jumped into net, facing shots from a collection of 11-year-olds one day last summer, part of a weeklong clinic run by Canton High boys' lacrosse coach Bill Bendell. "Hey, be careful," Bendell told Lodge, fully aware that he did not have a returning goalie this spring. "You're going to really play yourself into that role." One month and eight games -- all wins -- into the 2013 season, Lodge has seized the position. The slender 6-foot-2, 165-pound junior boasts a stellar 4.8 goals-against average and .723 save percentage for the Bulldogs, who sit atop the Hockomock League's Davenport Division. Canton has already topped its win total of a year ago, a 7-11 season that ended with a 5-4 loss to Weston in the preliminary round of the tournament. (   05/02/2013 1:19 AM )

  • North Andover girls' lacrosse following the lead of freshman goalie Lauren Hiller

NORTH ANDOVER - Her helmet still strapped on her head, Lauren Hiller was sitting in the corner of the field with her rest of her North Andover teammates, quietly waiting for the postgame chat from coach Karen Murdoch-Lahey after a convincing 18-8 win over Chelmsford. After the Scarlet Knights broke their huddle, the freshman goalie began answering questions, a bit nervous at first, a contrast to her poised play in the cage for 45 minutes. But as soon as the conversation turned from small talk to lacrosse, her head popped up, her eyes opened wide, and she relaxed. It was fitting. With the first-year goalie proving to be an anchor in the back, North Andover is quietly letting foes know that it is here to stay, off to a 9-1 start. (   05/02/2013 1:18 AM )

  • MIAA commits to proposal to televise state championship games

If 26 or more state associations commit to the idea before the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) summer meeting next month in Denver, the proposal becomes a reality. St. John's Prep suffered its first and only loss of the season against Xaverian back on April 4. The No. 1 ranked Eagles did not let history repeat itself in the rematch with the Hawks on Wednesday, cruising to an easy 7-3 road victory in Westwood. St. John's Prep (12-1) wasted no time getting on the scoreboard lit up in this one. Nick Bragole drove a solo home run into the neighboring lacrosse field in the top of the first inning. The drive gave Eagles starter Brandon Bingel a lead to protect early and it was a lead he would not relinquish. The senior struck out seven over 5 2/3 innings of work and sat the Hawks down in order on three occasions. • Duxbury boys' lacrosse escapes from Hingham

As the battle for the league title heats up, every game is huge, but even more between conference rivals. On Hingham's turf, No. 2 Duxbury came away with an 8-7 overtime victory Tuesday to remain undefeated in the Patriot League. The Green Dragons are 8-4 overall, but all of their losses have come against out-of-state schools. "It was a huge win," Duxbury coach Chris Sweet. "It goes a long way towards winning the league. It's usually always a tight game [against Hingham]." The history between the two teams has created a bit of rivalry. Before 2000, the Green Dragons rarely beat Hingham, but in the last decade they've dominated the No. 11 Harbormen. At 2:51 of overtime, senior attackmen JC LoConte (two goals, two assists) netted a man-up goal from 18 yards out for the win. "It's still such a heated rivalry," Sweet said. "But, it was a hard-fought game most importantly." (   05/01/2013 7:35 AM )

Describing Hajjar as humble is an understatement, and despite a 9-1 record, including stunning the state's top threat, Milford, he still feels there's work to do. • Norwood High softball team committed to making a successful run

NORWOOD ญญ-- Carol Savino has coached the game, in various positions and communities, for 50 years, the last four at the helm of the varsity softball program at Norwood High. Two weeks ago, she realized that she had a pretty special group. It was a cold and rainy Friday afternoon, the final hours before spring vacation, and her Mustangs were not scheduled to play a game until the following Wednesday. So the 68-year-old Savino, normally a stickler for detailed, three-hour practices, made the workout optional. "They said they wanted to practice," Savino said. "Same thing with Monday [Patriots' Day]. I told them straight: 'You can have Monday off. Or you can practice. It's up to you.' And not one of them said they wanted Monday off." That level of commitment is a big reason why the Mustangs started the season 6-2. (   04/28/2013 12:00 AM )

Bentley women's lacrosse coach Carissa Medeiros never saw Megan Wiggins play the game at Acton-Boxborough Regional, where she was a second team Dual County League all-star as a senior. The graduate student, who netted a goal and added three assists Tuesday on senior night as the Falcons (11-4 overall, 9-2 Northeast-10) rolled to their fifth straight victory, toppling Merrimack, 19-10, ranks fourth in program history in goals (141) and points (200). NEEDHAM -- It doesn't take a miracle to keep St. Sebastian School slugger Justin Bellinger off the basepaths, but there are times when it can feel that way.
