LYNN — Masconomet’s defense withstood constant pressure from North Andover’s strong frontline and capitalized on its chances to win the Division 2 North sectional final, 2-1, Monday afternoon.

The Chieftains scored in the opening two minutes. Freshman Bryan Gilbert took a long throw-in that reached senior defender Jeffrey Panella. Panella’s header almost looped over North Andover goalkeeper Marc Patnaude.

Patnaude managed to push the ball over his head, but it went as far as Masconomet’s Edison Forbes, who tapped the ball in from a yard out.

For the rest of the first half, the Knights created good scoring opportunities but weren’t able to find the back of the net. Senior forward Mike Skarbelis took a shot from 30 yards that flew just wide of the left post.
