Quick exit for Eastie
For the second straight year, top-seeded East Boston (14-1-3) hit a dead end in the opening round of the Division 1 North boys' soccer tournament.
Senior Steve Bordeau drove home the winner with 56 seconds remaining in the second overtime as 17th-seeded Westford stunned previously undefeated Eastie, 2-1, and advanced to the quarterfinals.
''The boys played very well today," said Westford coach Tony Dileo. ''They've been through a lot of adversity this year with injuries, guys being forced to step up. I thought they played very good ball against a tough, tough team."
Sean McCusker scored visiting Westford's first goal, and senior Chris Rucinski made six saves in the victory.
Division 1 North: Taylor Bracken made two saves as St. John's Prep toppled Salem, 3-0. Bracken has 10 shutouts this season . . . Senior Michael Nikiforov stopped a pair of penalty kicks for his 10th shutout as Framingham blanked Lowell, 1-0.
Division 2 North: Junior Mark Gaudette had a goal and an assist, and senior midfielder Dean Tzortzis helped Masconomet control play in a 3-1 quarterfinal win over Swampscott . . . Senior All-Scholastic Mike DeSantis scored the winner 20 minutes in as Stoneham (15-3-1) ousted Winchester, 2-0. John Yerxa earned the shutout with four saves . . . Senior captain Jared Joaquin had a goal and two assists and senior Richard Whalley netted the winner as 10th-seeded North Andover (10-3-6) slid by No. 7 Dracut, 3-2.
Division 3 South: Junior Mayron Souza had a hat trick and senior Paulo Dearojou notched a goal and two assists as Blue Hills (14-3-4) routed Sacred Heart, 5-1, in first-round action.
Girls' soccer
Division 2 North: Senior captains Cara Cadigan and Annie McNerney each had a goal and an assist as Swampscott blanked Wilmington, 2-0. Senior Rachel Paskievich made seven saves for her fifth shutout of the year . . . Sophomore Erin Kaufman scored and junior Eliza Kann-Bower made 15 saves as Wayland stopped Belmont, 1-0.
Division 3 North: Freshman Holly Provenzano registered a hat trick to lead Savio Prep (13-4-2) to the school's first tournament win, 7-0 over Maimonides.
Division 1 South: Junior Giovanna DaPrato scored the winner in overtime as top-seeded Marshfield (17-1-1) survived Franklin, 2-1.
Division 2 South: Freshman Nicole Savi scored the lone goal 31 minutes in as Dedham (17-2-1) ousted Silver Lake, 1-0.
Field hockey
Division 1 South: Kendra Teixeira made eight saves as Sandwich (15-3-2) defeated Norwood, 2-0, in a quarterfinal match. Senior Jess Wade and junior Lindsay Neeven scored for the Blue Knights.
Division 2 South: Senior Melissa Curtin scored the winner with two minutes remaining in the second overtime as 17th-seeded Hopkinton upset No. 8 Holliston, 2-1. ![]()
