A year after not winning one Bay State Conference match, the No. 6 Norwood girls' soccer team qualified for the state tournament for the first time in history yesterday with a 1-1 tie against Natick.
"We had numerous opportunities to finish that just went wide or over the net," said Norwood coach Jay Dupuis. "Ended up having to settle for the tie."
The Mustangs got on the board first when Bay State scoring leader Sam Vilaboa set up sophomore Brianna Quintiliani. Norwood held the lead until 17 minutes had elapsed in the second half.
Dupuis is proud of his team's improvement this season and attributed much of it to the play of the Ryan sisters, senior captain Courtney and freshman Cory, who have solidified the midfield and allowed Vilaboa (15 goals) to move back to forward. Cory (7 goals, 8 assists) is second on the team in points, and Courtney returned from a torn anterior cruciate ligament this season.
Vilaboa and the Ryans have combined for 25 goals for the Mustangs (9-1-2, 7-1-2).
