Entering yesterday's game against Stoneham, the Wakefield boys' soccer team had one thing on its mind: winning.

That's something the Warriors had not done yet this season, and something they hadn't done against Stoneham in 12 years.

But all that changed as Wakefield shut out the visiting Spartans, 3-0, avenging a 3-1 loss earlier this season.

"We certainly had that revenge angle going on," coach Sam Hochberg said. "The kids knew we had the ability to beat them, we just had to do the right things."

Sophomore Nakia Brown scored the first goal with a little more than 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Brown received the ball from junior Ryan DiBenedetto with his back to the goal, turned, and fired a shot into the low right corner of the net.

The Warriors took that 1-0 lead into the break and came back out maintaining their offensive pressure.

"That was the first time all season we had the lead at halftime," Hochberg said. "We reminded them that they had to play 80 minutes of soccer and that we weren't going to go into a shell and just defend."

Wakefield made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal by Andrew Kuks a little more than 10 minutes into the half. The Warriors tacked on another goal with a little more than 11 minutes remaining in the game on a strike by Mike Boodry.
