Westford's Brewer steps up against Boston Latin
Playing backup for an All-New England keeper isn't always the most active role, so when Westford senior Lauren Brewer gets the chance to fill in as striker, she takes it.
"It's tough," said coach Tracy Capone. "We try to get her on the field when we can."
Yesterday, Brewer found the net twice as the Grey Ghosts trounced Boston Latin, 4-0, in girls' soccer. After scoring on a header off a corner kick 11 minutes into the game, the utility player struck again in the same fashion, six minutes into the second half.
"We were thrilled," Capone said after that win that boosted Westford to 9-3-1 and qualified it for the tournament. "We've been working on trying to score off of corner kicks in practice."
Second in line to the dominant A.J. Millet, Brewer has been in net only once, for a 30-second appearance against Acton Boxboro, when Millet suffered a minor injury.
But on a team that has had its share of injuries this season, Brewer is just one example of a player stepping up, regardless of position. Ten players were inactive for Westford yesterday.
With Westford guaranteed a pass into the playoffs, the focus has shifted. "Our first goal is to get healthy," said Capone. "We'll go from there."
