It's becoming an annual fall classic: Framingham vs. Medford in the Division 1 boys tournament. Meeting for the third straight year in the competition, host Framingham endured a physical game laced with fouls and offside calls yesterday and took a 1-0 win on an unseasonably warm afternoon.
"They're a good team," Framingham coach Dan Avery said of Medford. "That's a tough first-round draw. We've seen them so many times in the last four or five years, it's almost like a league game."
If the many encounters have given the teams an opportunity to get to know each other, they've also given them the chance to get on each others' nerves. The fast-paced game was often interrupted by fouls because of rough play inside and outside the lines.
"It was just a very physical game, but we just worked really hard," said Framingham senior Aaron Kanarek.
Kanarek was a big part of the effort, providing the game's only score.
With 12 minutes left, junior midfielder Marlon Ramalho took the ball down the left sideline.
"I knew he was going to dribble back and I was waiting, thinking, 'Don't mess this up,' " said Kanarek.
Kanarek didn't. He slid the ball into the left side of the net and drew a raucous ovation from his teammates when Avery lifted him immediately following the play.
The goal came after many opportunities. The Flyers had three forays inside the penalty area in the final six minutes of the first half. Medford had a golden opportunity midway through the second half, but Framingham defender Ryan Pennie cleared the ball off the goal line.
Framingham, which lost to Medford in the 2004 playoffs, eliminated the Mustangs for the third straight season. The Flyers will play host to Everett in a North quarterfinal tomorrow.
