Witches brew up overtime stunner
Salem handed second-seeded Arlington Catholic its first loss of the season yesterday, beating the Cougars, 3-2, in overtime in a Division 2 North first-round girls’ soccer game.
The victory was the Witches’ first postseason win in 10 years.
“I told the girls the postseason is a different season. We have to go out and win games,’’ Salem coach Jessica Doyle said. It was the fifth consecutive year Salem (8-6-5) has made the tournament.
“They had two girls with double digits in goals and assists. It was a good fight today and a great comeback,’’ Doyle said.
The Cougars held a 2-0 lead early in the opening half. But Salem came back and with 12 minutes left when junior striker Jasmine Bryant (14 goals, 4 assists) scored with an assist from senior defender Audrey Wyke. With less than five minutes left in the half, junior defender Lauren Schaejbe scored an unassisted goal for a 2-2 tie.
After a scoreless second half, Witches’ junior midfielder Desiree DeLeon crossed the ball to Bryant in the box five minutes into overtime. Bryant settled the ball, and scored into the left-hand corner.
