Falmouth acts quickly in overtime
What couldn’t be decided in 90 minutes of play only took one minute of overtime yesterday, as Falmouth advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division 1 South state boys’ soccer tournament, 3-2, over Whitman-Hanson in sudden death on the second goal of the game from Justin Mendes.
Falmouth’s Rickey Moore also came up huge, saving 12 shots in the overtime victory.
Whitman-Hanson came out strong, behind the stellar play of junior forward Justin Blight, who scored twice in the first half.
The second half was a different story as the Clippers battled back. Senior captain Mendes got Falmouth on the board, scoring off a pass from Tyler Singer-Clark midway through the second half.
At one point in the second half Blight stole the ball and had a breakaway. But Moore charged out to make a great save.
With two minutes remaining midfielder Matt Flynn, who had experienced cramps, reentered the game and with roughly 20 seconds remaining scored off a cross from Charlie Breslin to tie the game just as time was set to expire.
The OT did not last long as Mendes took a cross from Breslin and put it home.
“It was a huge win, coming back from down, 2-0 ,was a significant achievement,’’ said Falmouth coach Bill Andrade.
