Lexington holds off Framingham
After squandering a two-goal advantage late in regulation, Lexington emerged victorious, 4-3, via penalty kicks against Framingham yesterday in a Division 1 North semifinal at Manning Field in Lynn.
Alex Lukez buried the final shot to give Lexington a 6-4 win in the shootout.
“We were up, 3-1, with 15 minutes left, and you really hope you can hold them off, but we didn’t,’’ Lexington coach Dan Rudolph said. “But we bounced back, we held them off in overtime, and we got the result we needed.’’
The Minutemen (18-0-3) advance to play Lincoln-Sudbury Monday in the sectional final at Woburn High School.
Lexington came out blazing. Kyle Petersson scored twice in the first 10 minutes, with both goals assisted by Thomas Ballenthin.
Framingham (15-2-3) got back in it in the 16th minute, when Gus Santos broke away behind the defense and lofted a chip shot over Lexington keeper Alex Ruocco, making it 2-1 at the half.
Lexington increased its lead in the 55th minute when Jordan Mizarek redirected a rebound to Lukez, who buried the shot for a 3-1 lead.
Framingham was far from finished, though. Jon Silva cut the deficit to 3-2 in the 68th minute on a breakaway, and Marlon Ramalho evened things with about 30 seconds to play in regulation.
“We never quit, down two goals,’’ Framingham coach Dan Avery said. “We had our chances to win the game.’’
The teams played evenly through two overtimes and the first six shots of the penalty kicks before Ruocco came up with a diving save of a shot by Lawrence Serugo. Ruocco’s play opened the door for Lukez to end the game moments later.
Framingham had knocked Lexington out of the tournament in each of the past two seasons, including a 3-2 victory a year ago in the North semifinals.
“Framingham has incredibly skilled players,’’ Rudolph said. “Just the fact that my team can battle a team like that, and come out with that result, I couldn’t be happier.’’
