Diamond stars back on display

Did you miss Harwich's James Hamilton Saturday at the state baseball finals in Lowell? Or Lincoln-Sudbury's Kevin Scanlon? How about Scanlon's teammate, Matt Miller?

You have another chance to observe the very best of Massachusetts high school baseball with today's doubleheader of the 30th annual Sectional All-Star games, which will pit the South against the West at 3 p.m. and the North against the Central at 7, both at Fraser Field in Lynn.

Sixteen players from both games will be selected to represent Massachusetts, which will play all-stars from Connecticut Saturday at Riverside Park in Hudson at 2 p.m.

Peabody's Mark Bettancourt and Belmont's Jim Brown coach the North team, which includes Scanlon (7-0, 0.16 ERA) and Miller (.442 average). Bettancourt has his ace as well, Kyle Multner (0.29), along with Tewksbury's Scott Oberg, who has a 0.98 ERA.

Pope John's Adam Cummings (.653) and Brighton's Guery Alonzo (.606) are among the best hitters in the state. Oberg and Georgetown infielder Tim Holland (.448) are the lone juniors on the squad.

Ted Curley of Milton and Catholic Memorial's Hal Carey are in charge of the South team, which is so deep that dominant starter Hamilton (.469) is listed as an outfielder. The coaches will have Walpole's Sean McDermott (8-0, 0.30) and Hanover's John Leonard (7-0, 0.45) to fuel the pitching.

Taunton's Brian DeMello (.525) and Sandwich's Brian Bodjiak (.523) are among the offensive standouts. Barnstable infielder Sean Adams (.453) is the lone sophomore on a squad of seniors.

In addition, the Boston City League will hold its All-Star game today at 3 p.m. at Fenway Park.
