Southborough's Matt Karis sets the bar high for the Lexington Blue Sox
After tossing a complete game five-hit victory for the Lexington Blue Sox against the Intercity League defending champion Andre Chiefs, Southborough's Matt Karis made it home Tuesday in time to watch the College World Series."I was able to see the last six innings. If I'm not playing then I'm studying the game," said the 2011 Gettysburg College graduate who has been an elite pitcher in the amateur league since 2007. Over that span, he has gone 30-3-1 in the regular season with 209 strikeouts and just 45 walks in 232 innings with a 1.24 earned run average. Burlington's Adam Bonfilo impresses at national track championships
It's not an event normally seen in Massachusetts, but that didn't stop Adam Bonfilio from proving he's one of the top track and field athletes in the country. The Burlington senior finished third in the octathlon Saturday at the New Balance National Outdoor Championships in Greensboro, N.C. The octathlon is a collection of eight events, one-day version of the decathlon but without the discus and pole vault, and the 1,000 meters instead of 1,500. Billerica's 4 x 800 team wins emerging elite division at Outdoor Nationals
After finishing second at the MIAA All-State track meet two weeks ago in the 4 x 800, Billerica won the event in the emerging elite division Friday at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. The team of Brendan Knickle, Alex Finestone, Peter Garmon, and Scott Arsenault finished first in 7:54.05. The emerging elite division is for individuals and relay teams who do not make the championship qualifying standards. Billerica had a familiar faceteam chasing them it. The second-place finishers was were from Newton North and the team of Mike Schlichting, Jared Freedman, Nick King, and Gabe Montague crossed in 7:55.96. In the 4 x 200 emerging elite, the Lexington team of Andrew Johnston, Ricardo Job-Reese, Michael Hunter, and David Johnston finished seventh in 1:30.90.( 06/15/2013 12:00 AM )

Marshfield's Ellen DiPietro wins in high jump at New England Track Championships
One week after winning the Massachusetts state title in the high jump, Marshfield junior Ellen DiPietro won the event again, this time at the 68th New England track championships Saturday in New Britain (Conn.). DiPietro cleared 5 feet, 8 inches to take first place by three inches over second-place finisher Natori Jones of Bloomfield (Conn.). Melrose senior Olivia Downey was fifth at 5-3. At last week's All-State meet, DiPietro won with a jump of 5-6, the same distance she cleared in winning the Division 2 title. In the boys' vault, Hopkinton's Aaron Beckwith was the top local finisher, taking fourth place by clearing 14-3. Lowell's Grace Ashworth was third for the girls, clearing 11-9. Newton North captures All-State boys' track title
WESTFIELD - Newton North was Powered by its "Big Four," It was a long drive and a scorching day at the track at Westfield State University but the Newton North boys' track team powered through to captured the MIAA All-State title at Westfield State University. The Tigers finished with 48¾ points, finishing with a dominant gap between themselves and the rest of the field. Lincoln-Sudbury took second with 28 points while Newton South finished just behind the Warriors with 27 to finish third. "Ryan Lucken finished first in the 400 meter, Carl Whitham took second in the shot put, Gabe Montague second in the 800, and David Oluwadara second in the triple jump, so they all came through and did what we hoped they would," said according to head coach Jim Blackburn.Blackborn In addition to the Big Four's performance, the Tigers took second in the 4x400-meter relay just behind Acton-Boxboro. The Colonials finished with a time of 3:22.04, a tad faster than Newton North's team that finished with a time of 3:22.48. Catarina Rocha edges Julie McConville in two-mile run at MIAA All-State championships
WESTFIELD -- Hingham won its first MIAA All-State girls' track championship Saturday afternoon at Westfield State University. "I can't believe how well they performed at what one would consider one of the hardest meets of the year and they just stood up and ran their hardest," Hingham coach Dave Jewett said. The Harbormen took were able to take first in team rankings with 35 points despite , with having only one individual first-place winner, sophomore Sierra Irvin. Lowell was second (32) and Notre Dame of Hingham third (30). Irvin placed first in won the 400 in 56.82 seconds, and anchored the 4 x 400-relay team for a fourth-place spot in 4:01.91. Newton North's track teams get to wear two crowns
ANDOVER -- It was a double win for Newton North as its boys' and girls' track teams swept the MIAA Division 1 championships Monday in Andover. The Newton North girls placed in 11 of 18 events, combining for 65 points and earning them their fourth consecutive Division 1 title. "Winning is our tradition, its part of our DNA,'' said Tigers coach Joe Tranchita. Division 2 track and field state meet: Notre Dame rolls to title
HINGHAM -- The girls from Notre Dame Academy didn't have to travel far Monday to claim the school's first Division 2 Eastern Mass. outdoor track championship. The host Cougars dominated the field Sunday, collecting 70 points, easily outdistancing Mansfield (50) and Natick (49.5). North Attleboro took home the boy's title, totaling 72 points. Reading (56.5) finished second and Mansfield (55) ended the third. The Cougars were visible at the medal stand early and often, during the meet, with six top-three finishes in the 18 events. Shauna Owen was big help for her team, finishing second in the triple jump and 400-meter hurdles. respectively. "Shauna's hands down one of the best captains I've ever had. Weston, Ursuline win Division 4 track titles
The Weston boys made it back-to-back Division 4 track titles Sunday at North Reading High School. Despite not placing first in any event, Weston finished on top out of 37 schools with 59.5 points. Newburyport was a distant second with 47 points. The girls' title went to Ursuline with 81.5 points, followed by North Reading (64) and Weston (63.5). Ursuline was led once again by Amy Piccolo, who won the 400 in 58.36, and Meghan Grela, who took first in the 800 in 2:19.25. Second was the highest placing for any Weston boy, with sophomore Collins Ebozue finishing the 100-meter dash in 11.41 seconds, senior Matt Herzig clocking 9:29.31 in the 2-mile run, and senior Craig Shytle reaching 21-9 in the long jump.( 05/27/2013 12:00 AM )

The Titans were led by senior Jake Moran, who won the javelin with a toss of 178 feet 11 inches, and while junior Tristan Hussey, who finished second in the discus. Sweeping success for Latin Academy
In her 30-plus years of working with city league track and field, being involved with Boston City League track and field, Mary Grant had never seen a meet as close as Monday's Boston City League girls outdoor championship championship at White Stadium. Latin Academy edged O'Bryant, 96-95, Tuesday to win its second straight girls title at the Boston City League track and field championships at White Stadium. "This, I have to say, in all the years I've been doing these meets is the closest meet I've ever seen," Grant, who is currently the city league's track commissioner, said before announcing Latin Academy's one point victory against O'Bryant in the girls side of the meet. said City League track commissioner Mary Grant, who has been involved in city track for more than 30 years. The 96 points by the Latin Academy girls were enough to earn their second straight outdoor championship. O'Bryant (95) came in second, followed by first-year program New Mission (76).First-year program New Mission collected 76 points to round out the Top 3. It was a clean sweep for Leussler as his boys were also victorious with 98 points followed by O'Bryant with 95. Pembroke's Amanda Claflin on the fast track at Wheaton
Amanda Claflin was prepared to try out for the swim team as a freshman at Pembroke High, until she realized the high cost of purchasing a suit. Instead, she chose track and field. The rest is history. Now a senior at Wheaton College, Claflin is a highly decorated Division 3 All-American sprinter, and on track to add more hardware later this month. Last week, Claflin was named Women's Track Athlete of the Year in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference after capturing the 100- meter (12.12 seconds) and 200-meter (25.40) dashe at the conference championships. On Thanksgiving morning, donning his blue and gold No. 33 Golden Warrior jersey, he walked out to midfield for the coin toss prior to Andover 's 22-19 playoff-clinching win over Central Catholic. On Sunday evening, Zavril was one of four seniors to receive the Paul Costello Courageous Player award at the Massachusetts High School Football Coaches Association's Hall of Fame banquet in Randolph. In the 35 years he has been coaching high school track and field, Weston coach John Monz had never seen both his boys' and girls' teams win the Division 4 Massachusetts State Track Coaches Relays in the same year. That changed Sunday, as both teams brought home titles. "We've won a number of boys' [titles] and a number of girls' [titles], but never won them on the same day," Monz said. On a beautiful day for track and field, hurdles were jumped, discs were thrown, records were broken and history was made. The the North Andover boys' and Central Catholic girls' each won the Division 2 Massachusetts State Track Coaches Relays titles. Before the events began, a moment of silence was held for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15 as well as Walpole High School graduate Matt Shea. Shea was a member of the 2004 graduating class and Rebels track team. He was diagnosed with cancer his junior year of high school and died recently passed away. PEMBROKE -- Third time is the charm.The boys' and girls' track teams from Hingham continued their domination on the oval and in the field, each walking away from the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Division 3 Relays with meet titles for the third consecutive season Saturday. The win was also each team's third state title of the 2012-13 school year, after both winning won the indoor relays and indoor meet titles. "We've never done anything like this before," said Harbormen boys' coach Fred Jewett. "In the winter, we just came out and clobbered people, but I knew that wasn't going to be the case [today]." Yet, a shining moment from his senior year at Weymouth High still resonates with MacDonald and his former teammates: the final out of their Bay State Carey Division title-clinching victory over Braintree four years ago. A team captain who played second base and took a regular turn on the mound, MacDonald's last pitch resulted in a grounder to fellow Brett Julian, who fired the ball to first baseman Mike Laracy to secure the win. Laracy and Julian are senior pitchers at Northeast-10 Conference rival Merrimack College while MacDonald, a redshirt junior, is putting terrific numbers for the Yellow Jackets. . Liz Holmes of Foxborough bounces back from running injury
FOXBOROUGH -- Liz Holmes didn't have a whole lot of fun this winter. After making a splash on the Massachusetts high school running scene as a freshman, quitting soccer last fall in favor of being coached by her mother in cross country and taking the Hockomock League girls' individual title in October, Holmes, a Foxborough High sophomore, seemed primed for another big track season. But that Oct. 28 Hockomock meet -- a 5,000-meter race she won in 18:39.15 -- is also her most recent. She missed the entire indoor track season with a stress reaction in her left femur. It happened in 24 hours, when a weekend in March typically reserved for bikinis and beaches presented Dartmouth College junior Abbey D'Agostino with an opportunity in Fayetteville, Ark. Win the 5,000-meter NCAA indoor championship on Friday night, return Saturday night to capture the 3,000-meter title, and become the first American ever to win both events in a career. D'Agostino accomplished in a single weekend what nobody else from the United States has ever done with four years of collegiate eligibility. As the calendar flipped to Sunday, March 10, the former Masconomet runner, who sat out most of her junior and senior years of high school with Anemia and Mononucleosis, went from being a standout collegiate athlete to a national treasure. Acton-Boxboro holds off Newton North in national track
Two of the top boys' relays relay teams during the Massachusetts indoor season took their talents to New York City Saturday for the New Balance Indoor Nationals, and Acton-Boxboro once again held off Newton North for state honors. The A-B team of Andrew Doelp, Brian Sommers, Nick Usoff, and Timothy Cox finished fifth in the sprint medley relay in 3 minutes and 31.50 seconds. The same group won the state championship last month at the Reggie Lewis Center. Close behind A-B, in sixth place in 3:31.55, was the Newton North team of Daniel Swain, Ben Porter, Jared Prior, and Ryan Lucken. Newton North was third in the state championship.
