The host Foxboro girls' lacrosse team defeated King Philip, 13-3, Friday, but there was something off about coach Brittany Jamieson-Sherry's squad. Then the coach subbed out junior midfielder Katie Notarangelo, the team's leading scorer, midway through the second half. "It's in your head and it's in everyone else's head," Jamieson-Sherry told Notarangelo on the sidelines. "Go in there and get it over with." "It" was the 100th goal of Notarangelo's scholastic career, and after finding the back of the net twice in the first 30 minutes of play she was sitting on 99. • Lawrence volleyball hitting its stride

Lawrence's Tony Hajjar has a unique outlook when it comes to coaching. "I [don't] think about the standings and it's OK if we lose," he said. What he finds most important is playing with grit and giving opponents a battle. Describing Hajjar as humble is an understatement, and despite a 9-1 record, including stunning the state's top threat, Milford, he still feels there's work to do. "I didn't think [winning against Milford] was important. It's about who we are, how good are we," he said. (   04/29/2013 8:50 AM )

  • Can the Cambridge boys volleyball team repeat?

Returning state champion Cambridge is one of the few boys' volleyball squads to remain intact with their most potent offensive player, Jalen Penrose, an unquestionable threat on the state's best team. Falcons coach Kelley Leary has anticipated the increased attention for Penrose, her son - especially after he hit .465 in his last game - and is focused on using him in a "supporting role." "Part of it is helping to develop other players and let them lead a bit and push them to step up," Leary said. Despite Penrose's all-around consistency - serving, passing, blocking, and hitting, which he holds the season record for under coach Leary (499 kills) - "he can't be the whole thing by himself," she said. Last season, Milford and Lincoln-Sudbury were the two most successful Central Mass. Division 1 boys' volleyball teams. This year, however, each must overcome a new challenge - one that neither program's long-tenured coach has ever encountered - if it is to recapture and exceed its 2012 achievements. Since defeating Lincoln-Sudbury last June to capture its first sectional title in 13 years, the Scarlett Hawks of Milford left the Midland Wachusett League for the Hockomock League. Meanwhile, Lincoln-Sudbury - which finished 19-2 and captured its seventh Dual County League title in 10 years - comes into this season having lost all 14 varsity players from last year. "To me, it's kind of exciting and thrilling in a strange way," 13th-year coach Elizabeth McClung said. (   03/31/2013 12:00 AM )
