Upon looking at Barnstable’s volleyball banner, the one celebrating 15 state titles ago, there is one year missing: 2009.
That was the year New Bedford, the last team to defeat Barnstable in the postseason, captured the state championship. Barnstable made sure that didn’t happen again Saturday in a battle of unbeatens in Pembroke as the Red Raiders swept New Bedford for the program’s 19th Division 1 South sectional. Barnstable (21-0) won, 25-19, 25-18. 25-17.
“I got to give my kids credit. It was a little bit harder than it should have been, but they weathered the storm and even though they’re making unforced errors they picked it up and stay composed,” said Red Raiders coach Tom Turco.
