Dynamo find home in MLS record book with home unbeaten streak

Will Bruin and Giles Barnes scored in the first half on Saturday night as Houston beat the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-0, to tie the record for the MLS home unbeaten streak in all competitions at 34.

Houston (3-1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute on a goal by Bruin.

The Dynamo extended their lead to 2-0 in the 42d minute on a header by Barnes. Brad Davis sent a cross into the middle of the box from outside the upper right box, and Barnes headed it inside the near post from 10 yards.

The Dynamo, who have not lost a home game in MLS or international competition since June 18, 2011, tied the record set by Real Salt Lake (2009-11).

Galaxy 2, Toronto FC 2 — Teenage substitute Jose Villarreal scored on a bicycle kick in the 92d minute to give the defending MLS champions a tie in Toronto in Galaxy star Landon Donovan’s return.

Substitute Jonathan Osorio gave Toronto a 2-1 lead in the 78th minute with his first MLS goal, but the 19-year-old Villarreal tied it for the Galaxy with his acrobatic goal.

Mike Magee scored his fifth goal of the season in the 16th minute to open the scoring for Los Angeles.

Coming off a sabbatical of nearly four months, the 31-year-old Donovan returned to action as a substitute in the 61st minute. He had a good scoring chance a minute later when Magee found him behind the defense, but scuffed the shot and goalkeeper Joe Bendik gathered it in.

Red Bulls 2, Union 1 — Thierry Henry finished a beautiful feed from Peguy Luyindula to break a tie in the 81st minute as host New York gave coach Mike Petke his first triumph as its head coach in five tries.

Dax McCarty’s goal in the 55th minute snapped a scoreless string of 307 minutes for the Red Bulls and staked New York to a 1-0 lead.

Timbers 2, Rapids 2 — Midfielder Will Johnson scored two goals, including a penalty kick in the 71st minute as Portland rallied from a two-goal, second-half deficit to tie host Colorado.

Sporting KC 2, Impact 0 — Claudio Bieler scored his third goal and Benny Feilhaber recorded his first two assists as host Kansas City defeated previously unbeaten Montreal.

Real Salt Lake 1, Seattle FC 1 — Robbie Findley and Luis Gil each scored first-half goals as Real Salt Lake claimed its first home victory of 2013.

Chivas USA 2, Whitecaps 1 — Eric Avila’s goal early in the second half proved to be the winner as Chivas USA beat visiting Vancouver.
