That First Netherlands Missed Penalty Shot Almost Went In

The penalty-shootout between the Netherlands and Argentina appeared to lack drama right off the bat when Dutch player Ron Vlaar was stuffed on his team’s first attempt, but new footage shows just how close his shot was to going in.

Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero was the hero of the match for stopping Vlaar’s shot and one other, but his celebration on Vlaar’s shot almost allowed the ball to roll into the net. Watch below as back spin carries the ball to the goal line but not over.

If the ball had rolled further, the tournament’s goal line technology would have alerted a referee. The save was great, but imagine if the ball had gone in. Is there a worse way to lose a World Cup game than by celebrating too soon?
