Hope Solo is close to return to starting lineup for US women's soccer team
Jozy Altidore scored a goal in his fourth consecutive international match, enough for the United States to edge Honduras, 1-0, in a World Cup qualifying game Tuesday night. Before 20,250 fans at Rio Tinto Stadium, the Americans remained atop the six-team CONCACAF group. The United States (4-1-1) won three straight games this month, all since a 0-0 draw at Mexico gave it a boost toward the top. It has also shut out its last two opponents, Panama and Honduras. Honduras (2-3-1) was the last team to win at the United States in a World Cup qualifying match, back in 2001. The Americans have won or drawn 25 straight at home since then.( 06/19/2013 12:00 AM )

Versatile Fabian Johnson helping US soccer team
SANDY, Utah -- Nothing defines Fabian Johnson better than versatility. It is one reason why the German-American was such a coveted addition to the U.S. national team in 2011. Johnson can shift between midfield and left back with ease. No matter where he plays on the field, he takes to the position like it is his natural one. ''It's not tough,'' Johnson said. ''It's just a different role that I have to play. I've played it a lot of times, so it won't make any difference to the team or to me.'' Johnson's versatility could be valuable once again when the United States takes on Honduras in a 2014 World Cup qualifying match Tuesday night at Rio Tinto Stadium, the home of Real Salt Lake of MLS. Honduras is the only team to beat the Americans in their hexagonal group this year and will certainly give them a stiff challenge in the rematch.( 06/18/2013 1:21 AM )
