Jeff Cunningham scored and Jon Busch and the Columbus defenders held the visiting San Jose Earthquakes scoreless on 14 shots in the Crew's 1-0 victory yesterday in an MLS game.
Cunningham leaped over Jeff Agoos in the 6-yard box to send Eric Denton's cross past John Conway in the 69th minute.
Cunningham's second goal of the season helped the Crew extend their unbeaten streak to five and stopped the Earthquakes' unbeaten streak at four.
Busch and defender Chad Marshall each thwarted prime scoring opportunities for San Jose in the first half.
In the seventh minute, Marshall slid across the goal mouth to clear Ian Russell's shot from close range off the line. Russell's attempt was set up by Jamil Walker, who sliced through the midfield on a long run before feeding Russell inside the penalty area.
Fire 1, Rapids 0 -- Nate Jaqua scored in the 66th minute to help host Chicago beat Colorado. Henry Ring had his MLS-leading fifth shutout for the Fire (3-2-4). With the victory, Chicago snapped a three-game winless streak and moved into first place in the Eastern Conference.
Damani Ralph and Andy Williams set up Jaqua's goal. Ralph took a pass from Williams in the corner and crossed the ball to Jaqua, whose 10-yard shot hit the crossbar before going in.
Galaxy 4, Burn 1 -- Jovan Kirovski scored in the 72d minute and added a goal on a penalty kick during stoppage time to help Los Angeles beat Dallas in Carson, Calif.Sasha Victorine also scored for Los Angeles (5-2-3), and the Galaxy got an own-goal. Ronnie O'Brien scored for Dallas (2-4-2).![]()
