Kreis is king of scoring

On the day Major League Soccer lauded the achievement of its new career goal-scoring leader, its marquee player was in no mood to celebrate. Jason Kreis became the career goals leader, scoring in the 37th minute of the Burn's 1-1 tie with D.C. United yesterday in Dallas. Kreis took a pass from Oscar Pareja and placed a left-footed shot into the left corner of the net, his 89th career goal breaking the record held by Roy Lassiter. The ball, as well as Kreis's shoes and uniform, are headed to the US Soccer Hall of Fame.

"Strangely enough, I felt like it was going to come today," Kreis said. "I felt like the moon and stars lined up, it was a home game, and I felt the conditions were great."

Alecko Eskandarian had a goal in the 58th minute, his fourth of the season helping United salvage the tie on a soggy Cotton Bowl field. Bobby Convey set up the goal when he crossed to a streaking Eskandarian from the left flank.

Phenom Freddy Adu entered for United in the 75th minute but did not take any shots. This was Adu's first appearance against the Burn, the team that originally held his MLS draft rights. Dallas traded Adu, 15, to United for future considerations. Adu wanted to play closer to home.

"You can't do anything to help your team win when you don't play," Adu said. "I'm a little frustrated, I'm not going to lie."

D.C. squandered a chance in the 19th minute when Convey's shot drifted wide of an open goal.

Rapids 2, Crew 1 -- A rare own goal by host Columbus and a score by Colorado's Jean Philippe Peguero helped the Rapids remain unbeaten in their last three games. Second-half substitute Edson Buddle scored for the Crew in the 89th minute, but Columbus missed a chance to tie in extra time when Chad Marshall's header was cleared off the Colorado goal line by midfielder Chris Henderson.

Both teams missed promising scoring opportunities in the first half before Colorado connected in the 37th minute. Midfielder Matt Crawford crossed a ball into the penalty area from the left side, where it was met by Peguero.

Peguero bulled past Crew midfielder Eric Denton and fired the ball by Jon Busch from 7 yards for his fourth goal of the season.

Denton added to his team's misery eight minutes later when his attempt to defend Crawford's centering pass went into his net. Denton's own goal was the first recorded by a Columbus player since the 2002 season.

Earthquakes 1, Wizards 1 -- Richard Mulrooney scored his first goal of the season in the 79th minute as host San Jose tied Kansas City. Mulrooney scored with a left-footed shot from 18 yards after being set up by Brian Mullan and Landon Donovan.

Kansas City's Jose Burciaga opened the scoring in the final seconds of the first half with his first career goal. Chris Klein passed to a wide-open Burciaga, who fired a shot from 16 yards into the upper-left corner of the goal.

Kansas City (6-4-4) took a 1-point lead over Los Angeles atop the Western Conference standings, while the Earthquakes (4-3-5) remained in third place.
