Agent: No new Real deal for Beckham

Soccer
David Beckham appears set for a Hollywood ending to his stay with Real Madrid, even though Madrid's president doesn't want Beckham's stay to end. According to Beckham's agent, the 32-year-old midfielder, whose recent return to form has sparked his club and England's national team, is bound for the Los Angeles Galaxy next month. "There is no intention of getting out of the Galaxy deal or reneging on the Galaxy deal," Simon Oliveira said yesterday. "David is looking forward to going to the States." Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon was quoted in the Spanish media as saying that he would try to persuade Beckham to stay and would use an escape clause in his Galaxy contract, although there is no evidence such a clause exists. Spanish media have reported that Beckham could back out of the deal with the Galaxy if he paid compensation of $13.42 million. Beckham signed a five-year contract with LA in January that will pay him an MLS-record base salary of $5.5 million annually and might be worth as much as $250 million with his cut from jersey sales, endorsements, and sponsorships. Beckham's contract with Real Madrid ends June 30 and he is set to move to MLS around mid-July. Real will clinch its first major trophy since Beckham joined from Manchester United in 2003 if it beats Real Mallorca at home in the final league match of the season Sunday. Beckham returned to action from a knee injury at the end of April and has been one of red-hot Real's most influential players . . . FC Dallas's leading scorer Kenny Cooper is expected to be out two months after breaking his right shin during a 3-1 win over the Galaxy Saturday.
