Earthquakes expose faults, take 3 points against Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Galaxy have two of the top scorers in Major League Soccer as well as a nonpareil setup man and pop culture icon in David Beckham.

They also have a seven-game winless streak.

Ryan Cochrane scored in the 90th minute, putting a rebound past Beckham at the right post after Galaxy goalkeeper Steve Cronin bungled a cross, and the San Jose Earthquakes beat the Galaxy, 3-2, yesterday before 26,071 at McAfee Coliseum in Oakland, Calif., ending their eight-match winless streak.

Darren Huckerby, an English import signed last month by the Earthquakes, and Arturo Alvarez, a six-year veteran brought in Monday by San Jose from FC Dallas in exchange for a first-round draft pick and cash, scored first-half goals for San Jose (4-9-6) against LA's porous defense.

The Earthquakes, who came in with the league's worst offense (12 goals in 18 games), posted their first three-goal match of the year.

Landon Donovan headed home Beckham's pinpoint cross for his 13th goal of the season, bringing Los Angeles (6-8-5) within 2-1 late in the first half.

Edson Buddle, who had a hat trick in Los Angeles's 3-0 win over San Jose June 14, tied the score with his 12th of the season in the 76th minute. Buddle's fake caused two defenders to bump into each other near the top of the penalty box. The striker then drilled a 14-yard shot past goalkeeper Joe Cannon.

LA is 0-4-3 in its last seven games.

FC Dallas 2, Toronto FC 0 - All-Star Kenny Cooper scored on a penalty kick in the 81st minute after Toronto's Amado Guevara received a red card, propelling visiting Dallas.

Cooper then scored in injury time to secure Toronto's first loss at home in 10 games this season. Toronto (6-8-4) is winless in its past six MLS games and 11 games overall.

Guevara was handed the red by referee Baldomero Toledo after appearing to strike Pablo Ricchetti in the face in the penalty area.

Cooper made no mistake with the penalty, going left to beat keeper Greg Sutton for his career-high 12th goal of the year.

In the 84th minute, Toronto defender Marco Velez was ejected for receiving his second yellow of the game, leaving Toronto two men short. Toronto trainer Carmelo Lobue was also sent to the dressing room after exchanging harsh words with the officials.

Cooper, who played in the MLS All-Star Game last month at BMO Field, scored from 30 yards out in injury time.

Newly acquired Toronto forward Chad Barrett, the leading scorer for Chicago this season, left late in the game with what appeared to be a right-leg injury.

Both teams were missing players who are with the US Olympic team. Dallas midfielder Dax McCarthy and Toronto midfielder Maurice Edu and defender Marvell Wynne are with the Americans in Beijing. In addition, Toronto didn't have forward Danny Dichio (concussion) and defender Todd Dunivant (ankle).
