Tiffeny Milbrett scored in the 90th minute, giving FC Gold Pride a 2-1 win over the Breakers last night in Santa Clara, Calif., in the debut for both teams in the Women's Professional League.

Kelly Smith had gotten the Breakers even in the 79th minute when Stacy Bishop set her up in front and she blasted a high shot past Nicole Barnhart.

But the hosts weren't done. Brandi Chastain helped spring Kandace Wilson down the right side. Wilson's cross was knocked down by Kristin Luckenbill (four saves), but she couldn't control it and Milbrett drove home the winner.

Smith nearly tied it again, but her left-footed shot from 22 yards out in stoppage time hit the crossbar.

"We are disappointed, but I thought we had some good performances and some average ones out there," said Breakers coach Tony DiCicco. "We just need to get better consistency. It was an exciting game and I think it would have been a fair result as a tie, but they took their chances and we didn't."

Eriko Arakawa scored in the 15th minute of the first half for FC Gold Pride.

The Breakers make their home debut Saturday night against Saint Louis Athletica at Harvard Stadium.

Sol 2, Sky Blue FC 0 - Three-time FIFA World Player of the Year Marta struck for her first WPS goals, netting a pair just before halftime, as Los Angeles won in Bridgewater, N.J.

MLS
Fire 1, Red Bulls 0 - Marco Pappa's goal helped Chicago overcome an early red card as it maintained its dominance of New York with a 1-0 win in Bridgeview, Ill.

Chicago won its fourth straight over New York since coach Juan Carlos Osorio broke his contract with the club to take over the Red Bulls before last season. In that span, the Fire have outscored the Red Bulls, 12-3.

Chivas USA 2, Crew 1 - In Carson, Calif., Eduardo Lillingston broke a tie early in the second half, helping Chivas get off to 3-0 start for the first time in franchise history and hand defending MLS Cup champion Columbus its second loss in four days.

Wizards 2, Earthquakes 0 - Aaron Hohlbein scored his first career goal, and host Kansas City beat San Jose for its first win.
