Breakers come out on short end
- |
The Boston Breakers lost for the first time since April 25, falling to Sky Blue FC, 2-1, in Piscataway, N.J., to drop into third place in Women's Professional Soccer.
Kelly Smith drew the Breakers (3-3-2) even in the 12th minute with her league-leading fifth goal, but Sky Blue's Kacey White put the winner past goalie Kristen Luckenbill in the 29th minute.
Smith was replaced just before halftime with an apparent knee injury, and that hindered Boston's comeback hopes. The Breakers' best chance to tie in the second half came in the 53d minute, when Kristine Lilly's close bid was turned away by Sky Blue goalie Jenni Branam.
"It wasn't a good enough game for us today," said Breakers coach Tony DiCicco. "Give Sky Blue FC credit, they scored two good goals, dug us a hole, and we were not able to get out of it."
Freedom 3, FC Gold Pride 1 - Host Washington (3-2-3) jumped into second place, getting first-half goals from Kristen Graczyk, Lisa De Vanna, and Cat Whitehill.
